Re: To anybody who's already had jaw surgery...

I agree with TitaniumAdded. Try to keep your nasal passages clear by using a humidifier and saline nasal spray. I really like my Vicks warm mist humidifier-it has been a lifesaver. I also used hydrogen peroxide and q-tips. The most effective way to really help things along is a long, steamy shower o...

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!

trc, I know just how you feel! Hang in there. I remember not wanting anything but water the first few days, but do try diluted juices or diluted Carnation instant breakfast. The instant breakfast drink was so helpful when I took my meds--it quickly washed away any terrible tastes. Just get through t...

Hi susanna. I am an RN too, and so glad that I can do the training when I return. I think it will work out perfectly.

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!

Sixteen days post op! So happy to be able to say that! I had an appointment with my OS yesterday. He took off all the old bands and placed new ones. Initially, I had tons of bands--vertical, criss-cross, you name it, I was banded SHUT! I still have one on almost every tooth, but it allows me to open...

Re: Splint removed but bite doesn't meet...

There are usually minor tweaks that are required after surgery. The orthodontist will use various configurations of elastics to get you to that perfect bite and smile!

Re: i had a fibrous union

Have you consulted with another surgeon for a second opinion on your problem? If not, I'd suggest doing that before going under the knife for a third time. If it were me, I would want to know for sure, what is impeding the healing process. Don't be hesitant to ask questions. Getting a second opinion...

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!

Lingualita, so glad to hear from you...I was getting worried. That must have been a miserable 3 days waiting for your second surgery! But, at least you have doctors that were willing to say that things didn't go as predicted, and went for the best possible outcome by doing the lower jaw. Even though...

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!

The philosophy on pain management is very strict here in the US. Pain is considered the 5th vital sign, along with temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. As nurses, we are required to have the patient rate pain on a 1-10 scale, medicate appropriately, and reassess after 1 hour. If...

Just wanted to add, I cannot imagine getting through this surgery with the US equivalent of tylenol and ibuprofen! You must have been in agony!

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!

Good idea! One more thing I'd like to have us note is what day(s) we considered our "turn around day". I thought that might be helpful for others who have upcoming surgeries. I live in Western US. I had Lefort I and BSSO. Movements were upper moved up 3-4mm and forward 1mm. Lower was moved forward (...

luke: we haven't heard from you since Tuesday--how are things going? Just wondering how you are doing with the banded jaws? What have you been eating? anything really good? I made a really good peach milkshake today that was probably the best thing I've had since surgery! Are you having trouble bein...
