My dentist makes custom mouthguards for sports and nightguards using the same mold process as retainers and then sends it off to an outside lab. I assume a retainer would be no different.

Hmm really? I keep hearing over and over on this site not to replace the Waterpik with flossing, but rather, use in conjunction with flossing. Do a lot of people replace using a Waterpik with flossing? I do use the Waterpik instead of flossing for a few days after some adjustments when my contacts ...

The scaling and polishing my hygienist does usually takes care of this. I'm not a smoker and only and intermittent coffee drinker. Remember that using any kind of whiting product (even the toothpaste) may cause your teeth to be spotty after the brackets come off.

You will go through many many changes during treatment. There were stages I thought my teeth looked exceptionally bad and others when I was quite satisfied with my progress. Orthodontics isn't linear and often it seems like you're always taking one step forward and two steps back. Don't worry about ...

Immediately after debanding I am going to the movies where I will watch a movie while munching on popcorn and waiting for my retainer. I will have a lunch of fresh greens with strawberries and candied pecans with a strawberry vinaigrette. After picking up my retainers, I will return home and BBQ ste...

NervousNewbie- Part of my job is to counsel at risk teens to make positive changes in their lives and I really like to focus on the stages of change. Recently I've realized that my decision to get braces followed (or will follow) the different stages. Stage I: Pre-Contemplation (there is nothing wro...

Have you actually tried this? My partner wears a mouthgard but has something against using "chemicals" to clean her appliance. I find the thing revolting as it only gets cleaned twice a year in an autoclave. Your feedback is much appreciated!

I know exactly what you mean! http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss189/macgirl4ever/11088c4d.jpg As you can see, I had to have another round of spacers and another round of molar bands to correct the issue. I felt that cleaning my braces was much easier when my second molars were not braced. I have ...

That's really good to know Dr. Rick! I didn't even consider bonding because I thought it would be 100% out of pocket. I'll have my dentist verify with my insurance just in case- it's a DHMO and while it does cover adult orthodontia I like to play it safe.

I've never had food stuck under my bands. The bands will, however, make your contacts more tight so it may be difficult to get floss in there at first AND the worst part is when you get food stuck between them-OUCH! It feels like having spacers all over again until you can get the offending piece (u...

Support! I have powerchains too and my front teeth are like the Katy Perey song Hot n Cold. They're apart then rogether, then not together, etc. A few weeks ago, my gap had finally completely closed bit after my dental cleaning when she scaled some tarter from behind my teeth, it opened again and I ...

You will clean the area between the band and your gum line as well as the crown of your tooth. The band will cover the most of the sides of the tooth. Your ortho will seal the band to the tooth so bacteria and other harmful substances will not get in there. Make sure that your ortho files down any r...

Are you kidding? I'm probably a little less than three MONTHS away from debanding and I'm already apprehensive about whether everything will finish how I want it (you're probably past this stage), if my teeth will move before I get retainers, if my ortho will be able to glue the wire to keep my fron...

Wow, it really does look uncomfortable. In my case, I was able to get a frenectomy before my gap fully closed. In fact, my ortho said my gap wouldn't close unless I had the procedure. That said, I really didn't have the amount of gum tissue you have between your incisors. Also, my gap is still not c...
