Herbst appliance versus teeth extraction
Hello, my 13 year old just got his braces on today. He has a severe overbite and major crowding on the uppers. His lower teeth are minimally crowded and are looking good for the most part. The orthodontist wants to pull the lower jaw forward using the herbst appliance for 12 months. He did suggest t...

What about pain issues? I've read some posts here and my big issue is that I have VERY sensitive teeth and gums already. My mouth already hurts and I don't take pain meds as they upset my stomach and send me into bouts of ulcer pain. Soooooo, these are the main reasons I've held off. I keep thinking...

40 years old and wondering about Invisalign
So, I have been to a few ortho consults about 2 years ago. I had every opinion in the book. You need jaw surgery top and bottom, you need 3 years of braces, we can fix this with Invisalign, etc, etc, etc.... Anyway, my top teeth were pushed forward from my wisdom teeth back in my 20's. I had braces ...

I'm resurrecting my old post here!! So, we haven't gone through with the braces yet. He still has a space maintainer on the top and his eye teeth are coming in but they are popped out a bit b/c of space issues so it looks like he's getting fangs, LOL! His 12 year molars are starting to come up and h...

So, how have things been going? Any new appointments? I also have a child with severe anxiety. He had a poor experience getting his space maintainers in last year at the ortho and he doesn't care for them at all. We've been to 4 other orthos to find one that he feels comfortable with and I think we ...

Well, I'm still wondering how much is hype. Quite frankly, though, I think I'm still going to go the Damon route. It doesn't hurt that the ortho who is going to do them is also the lowest priced. He has a contractual agreement with our insurance and even though I don't have coverage for ortho, I sti...

Damons vs an RPE?
My 9 year old needs braces (as do I ). I was told by the doc who specializes in Damons that the Damons will widen his arch instead of using an RPE. We had been told by another ortho that he'd need an RPE and then braces. This Damon guy says it's not necessary and he can achieve the right result with...

I had called my insurance company to 'feel them out' on the jaw surgery topic. They won't cover it! I think it's a corporate thing with my husband's company, there are quite a few things they won't allow insurance to pay for. And, my husband and I have decided that we can't afford the surgery. The b...

JennieLee, I was just reading your story actually! I have similar crowding on the top but I think my arch is narrower than yours! I also have the same crowding on the bottom but again I think I'm a bit smaller in the mouth area. My smile isn't as wide as yours. I really need to get some pics on here...

Ready to cry! So frustrated!
So, I've been to 4 orthos so far for consults. The consensus is that I should get jaw surgery but I refused that mainly b/c I have had bad reactions to pain meds, etc. The last ortho today told me that he might not even put braces on me b/c of my jaw problem. He said that braces will straighten them...

I may even get a 4th opinion. I mean I'm looking at spending about $5000, I better be sure of what I'm doing! I just wish I could see the future! I know my crossbite is a big issue and that they 2nd ortho was concerned that the braces would really open my bite. I just want my molars to touch and I w...

ARRGGHH! 2nd opinion: totally different approach
So, I was all set to go. The ortho wanted to do an extraction on the bottom in front and then do braces top and bottom. I decided to get a second opinion just in case! Well, I got one totally different. Ortho 2 said that she would pull 2 teeth up top so that my bite can be aligned with the bottom te...

Skyhawk, you answered my question perfectly! This is where I think I'm headed. I'm going to go with the single tooth extraction on the bottoms and get both bottom and top braces to align everything. I'm thinking that close is better than what I have now anyway. I've read up on jaw surgeries and sinc...
