It's especially important to wear it as much as possible in the first 4 to 6 months after the braces come off. It's interesting that you say that Lynn - my ortho has told me that only need to wear my Essix full time for the first month (so tomorrow!) then after that only at nights - maybe this is b...

I can totally empathise with how you feel about wearing your retainers. I'm still braced on the bottom, and have a bonded retainer AND an Essix on top. My mouth always feels so full, and I always have a funny taste in my mouth. I don't have anything constructive to add, except to say I totally get h...

Hot liquids could damage them or cause them to warp. I take mine out for hot coffee. See, my ortho told me I'd be fine drinking tea and coffee. He also told me to keep it in when I'm eating. The only thing he told me NOT to do was to let freshly boiled water come into contact with it. Coffee that i...

Not sure about the Hawley, but I drink black coffee every day with my Essix in and it doesn't stain, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I have a bonded retainer behind my top two front teeth (as well as an Essix) - it's there to stop my teeth from trying to overlap again. Felt a bit weird for the first few hours - kept running my tongue over it, but it's fine now - ok so I'm wearing my Essix over it 24/7 just now, so that means I ca...

I've had 3 emergency visits since I was first braced in Dec 2004 - twice I've eaten a powerchain, and once I dislidged the wire from the back bracket, and it bent funny and I couldn't get it back in.

I only have my braces off the top arch so far, and have an Essix retainer as well as a bonded retainer behind my front two teeth. I have got a very slight lisp when I speak and it hasn't really improved in the week i've been wearing it - but it is very slight. That said, I believe that Essix retaine...

I had 2 lower 2nd bicuspids extracted for my treatment. TBH it wasn't the most pleasant experience. Not in that it was painful, rather, the injections didn't numb my mouth very well, and it took 7 injections and half an hour before the dentists was able to start removing the teeth. The teeth came ou...

Keeping Essix retainer clean and fresh

Ok, so I've had my upper Essix for 5 or so days now, and I was wondering what other people do to keep theirs fresh and clean? My ortho told me just to use my toothbrush to clean it from time to time, but I'm not sure if this enough. Retainer Brite isn't available over here in the UK, and I'm relucta...

Thanks guys :D I've been walking around like this  all the time since yesterday! First of all he put my bonded retainer on behind my front two teeth (this will hopefully stop them ever trying to cross over again), then he took the brackets off - he had a new tool for removing ceramics ...

Today's the day!

Well, this has come round quite quickly (although at the same time it feels like I've been wearing braces forever!) - in 2 hours I'll be in the chair at the ortho having my top braces removed After 18 months I'm really happy with how my teeth look - though I am going to ask him to shape my left cani...
