frustration

I used to post here a bit when I first got braces back in the Summer of '06. Since then I've tapered off, but I'm back to vent. I hope no one minds! I've been in braces for 30 months now and it seems like there's no end in sight. Every time I go to the ortho it seems like there's something new to fi...

I was actually going to post something very, very similar. It's been 30 months for me now and I'm tired, tired, tired. I have been for more than a year. They were supposed to have been off around June of last year, but they kept bumping it back and back. Most recently, I was supposed to have final x...

jaw asymmetry, facial asymmetry?

For people who have/had asymmetrical jaws, either hypocondylism, or jaws that were slightly turned, I'm curious as to whether there was other facial asymmetry also, like asymmetry of the cheekbone.

If so, what causes it? Anyone?

I'm a little confused as to why they are recommending genioplasty if you have problems with the cartilage of your jaw being worn down/slipping out of place. Genioplasty is a superficial treatment and wouldn't affect the position or improve the health of your jaw. It would just make your chin look mo...

Elective? Yes - I doubt any of us here would have died without this treatment. But that doesn't mean there were not health benefits. So, what I am saying is that just because it's elective doesn't equate to it being in any way frivolous or being merely cosmetic. Yes, I understand that. Most people ...

Thanks everyone for the information! It seems to be pretty standard across the country. Quebec is known for having constantly to do things differently, though, so hopefully there won't be any added bureaucracy. I'm assuming that it wasn't entirely elective surgery for everyone who posted here? I'll ...

The discussion of mouth-breathing being related to abnormal facial development is an interesting one. When I was about 6 my parents noticed that I was developing a variety of problems, including bad breath, mouth-breathing and snoring, and took me to the doctor. The doctor told them I had swollen ad...

I'm a little late on this discussion, but a friend of mine had orthognathic surgery in high school. She only ever mentioned it in a really low key way, so when she came out with - no joke - a totally new face it was ... needless to say, unexpected and everyone was in shock. So, I can speak from the ...

For the Canadians...

Hi there, I'm new to the oral surgery forum, though I used to post occasionally on the metal mouth board when I first got braces in 2006. I just have some questions for Canadians regarding insurance and getting a consult. A lot of the information online seems to be for Americans, but our system is d...

I felt the same way when my teeth were extracted! They were so cute and healthy, and have been there with me for so long, through thick and thin, that I actually felt bad having them taken out. lol. I also felt that it was a total waste to have them removed for the sake of my vanity, but hey, I got ...

springs! I hated those. I had to have one so that they could create space between my teeth. Whatever you do, don't try and tongue at them after you eat. I used to do it absentmindedly to try and clean my braces, and my tongue would constantly get snagged!

Braces and general image concerns

I've been in braces since June of 2006 and (hopefully) will have them off this Summer or Fall, but I've noticed an unusual side effect of braces and that is that I've become hyper-aware of "flaws" in other parts of my face also! For instance, reading about causes of malocclusion lead me to...
