I worry about getting pre-surgery braces again and being stuck with them because the surgery might keep getting postponed. Or paying for the surgery and having to wait for months/years.

Got mine off 2 years ago. It hasn't gone "back to normal" which I'm happy about. My face shape improved.

A solid pillow (hospital pillows are so flat) that is thick so you can sit up and sleep without sliding down through the night.
