The procedure itself was definitely not the issue for you, but rather the incompetent surgeon.

I've had braces on since April 2020, for what was supposed to be 18 months, but COVID messed that all up and I probably have 9-12 months more to go.

Braces themselves don't cause dental issues. The problem is cleaning. It sounds like your friend did not properly clean her teeth while she had braces on and that's probably what caused her issues. Are you still expanding your RME? I only had my RME in for 90 days, and only expanded it during the first 2 or 3 weeks. Just curious why your RME is in your mouth for so long.
