Re: Chin implant

I went to the surgeon this week and am scheduled to get my chin implant this week. My herbst has been activated again to bring my jaw further forward so I do have more of a jawline now, just no chin. My surgeon is hopeful that this this procedure will enhance my profile.

Re: Headgear tips

Thank you. He's not sure, but estimates I will need the headgear another 5 months. He said I may need to wear it at night only for several months after that. Every few months, he adjusts it and it is really sore and uncomfortable for a while. He adjusted it quite a bit last week and gave me a new fa...

Anxiety during treatment

Since starting orthodontic treatment, I've had a lot of anxiety that's come from my treatment. It's been pretty involved for me in an effort to avoid jaw surgery and some of my appliances have been very uncomfortable, making it difficult to speak. I also have felt odd being an adult in treatment wit...

Re: Chin implant

I went back to the surgeon last week and we set a date for the chin implant in early November. He wants me to still be in braces and the herbst, though the work of the herbst should be mostly complete.

Re: Headgear tips

I'm actually more adjusted to wearing the headgear now. I am wearing it 14-16 hours a day. After a while, with the pressure, it felt more comfortable in than out. I did have a painful phase last week when my orthodontist adjusted it quite a bit, but I've gotten used to it again.

Re: new tongue crib

As an update, I struggled so much with the new tongue crib, that my orthodontist consulted with my speech therapist and I got the old tongue crib back. It does hang low and speaking is difficult, but it is better than with the other one. I am now wearing my headgear 14-16 hours a day, and am actuall...

Re: New appliances / tongue crib and herbst activation

Thank you for the info. My SLP is actually already a COM. I'm having such a hard time with the new tongue crib that both she and my orthodontist agreed that if I don't adjust by my appointment in two weeks, they will put the old one back in.

Re: Chin implant

Thanks for the info. Did most of the patients you see this procedure done on have braces or the surgery where they also move their jaw forward? I had a consult with a surgeon today. They took photos like at an orthodontic consult. He said that the herbst is bring my jaw forward and giving me a more ...

Re: new tongue crib

How long did you have to wear your crib? Did you speech improve? I just got a new one on Friday and it's even worse. My orthodontist said I was compensating with the crib by having a lateral thrust so I got a new crib that keeps my tongue from the front teeth and the side front teeth too. I go to sp...

Re: Getting an expander at 40+ years old

I have an upper and lower expander. They are both quite uncomfortable, esp because the top one hangs low and blocks my tongue. Turning the key also hurts. Mine caused a gap to form between my front teeth and eventually I had to get extractions but still have the expanders guided with braces, elastic...

Chin implant

I recently posted about my herbst appliance and the activation to bring my lower jaw forward. At the appointment on Friday, my orthodontist also mentioned the possibility of me getting a chin implant. He named some surgeons I could get a consult with and recommended it but also said it's my choice. ...

New appliances / tongue crib and herbst activation

Has anyone ever had an unexpected treatment/appliance at an orthodontist appointment? I went in for what I thought was a normal appointment on Friday and my orthodontist said we were going to activate my herbst to bring my lower jaw further forward. I've had the herbst for a while and have gotten so...

Re: Headgear tips

I have two elastics as well but my orthodontist said the headgear was to hold and push back my molars because of the extractions and because of the expansion, which is pushing my front teeth out. He said elastics weren't enough and because of the severity of my overjet and overbite, I needed the hea...

Headgear tips

I recently had two premolars extracted to help make room and address an overjet and overbite. Part of the extraction process is that I have to wear headgear for the next 6-9 months to hold back my molars and help close the overjet and overbite. My orthodontist wants me to wear it 14-16 hours a day, ...
