Re: Best way to clean a clear retainer - hints and tips please!

Great thread as I've had an Essix retainer now for ~4 months. I've been cleaning it with toothpaste :o and denture cleaner tablets. It does look a little rough now but ortho just switched me to a Hawley to close up some gaps missed in treatment. Plan is to make a new Essix once I'm done and so maybe...

Re: Genioplasty revision?

Hi there- your face is going to change even more in the next year. It takes that long to get rid of all the swelling. You still have quite a bit on the left side of your face. I hated my face at 3 months. I look at it now and then look at it before and think, well it's not so bad. Not what I persona...

Hey There- personally I'd want the bite to be adjusted as much as possible before the surgery because you want to only have to do minimal tweaking following because you want the bones to set and heal; not moving with adjustments.

Re: 15 days post-op - double jaw -

Hi There Academianut, Stay strong because the swelling takes a full year to completely resolve. Interestingly enough, I found that as the sensation was returning, the swelling had gone down. My surgery was far from perfect but you do need to be patient and don't push the envelope if you're not ready...

Re: Unbearable Tightness 9 months post genioplasty

Hi Gary, If you do decide to go with a second opinion; consider obtaining it from a doctor in another city who will likely not know the surgeon (hopefully). My MMA surgeon was located in NYC; I live in MD. I had several complications ; of which, one of them required me to have a second surgery at si...

Re: Unbearable Tightness 9 months post genioplasty

Hi There- has anyone mentioned starting with Physical Therapy? I know my surgeon had mentioned it to me as a possibility if I had serious issues with the popsicle stick stretching exercise. This was to manually force open my jaw as I had the MMA procedure. Another thought is Botox. I know I've read ...

Re: Surgeon - likeability vs experience

Hi There-after nine years, the surgeon who takes you back is going to have to possibly chip away at any bone that has remodeled around the hardware. It may be a piece of cake or it might be a challenge. I would ask local guy how many patients he's taken into the OR and removed hardware. Also whether...

Notable Gum Recession Eight Weeks After Braces Removed

Hello Fellow Posters, I'm ~ 2 1/2 years post MMA and eight weeks post removal of braces. This past Friday, my back lower gum against my molar was irritated. I brushed and waterpiked and then really looked at my gum line. I was quite disturbed to see the gum line around my crown had split. I had note...

Re: Which Orthodontist, how to choose!

Hello-yes be wary of an ortho who is telling you he can get everything corrected in under 12 months. Most treatment plans will be ~24 months or longer in my case. Not saying this is what happened in your case but I think some of these consults say what they think you want to hear so they can get you...

I think with his lower teeth the same thing that happened to me is happening to him. He got a couple of extractions and now the canines are tilting a little I learned after the fact in my case that a possible complication with extractions is for the teeth to tilt inward. In my experience, we could n...

Re: Whitening your teeth BEFORE braces?

Just out of curiosity with the folks who had the whitening professionally done; is it worth it if you love and I mean really love coffee?? I brush my teeth or rinse after coffee but I drink it in the morning and then as a pick-me-up at ~3p to 4pm.

Re: Headgear tips

Hello Linda, I feel your pain with regards to the headgear. I had the unfortunate experience of having to wear one as a pre-teen; forty years ago... I'm kind of surprised that they are making you wear one instead of going the elastics route. Headgears are usually used during growth periods I thought...

Re: Upper jaw loose 4 months post-op

Hi There- I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I have been fortunate that I have not had to return to the OR for this particular reason. I was having serious popping issues immediately after surgery; to the point where the surgeon was able to hear it a week post-op. When it happens, it feels l...

Re: Revision Jaw Surgery after 2.5 Years?

Hey There- I'm sorry that you had to go through that with some unintended outcomes. In regards to the deviated septum, that's actually a known complication that my surgeon nor anesthesiologist ever briefed me on during the consent phase. The increase risk is due to the fact that you're intubated nas...
