Re: Need some advice on jaw surgery (underbite)

OP: I suggest you get a diagnosis from your oral surgeon first, and then get the surgery pre-authorized. The oral surgeon's office handled all of that for me. Then, move forward with braces. This is the safest approach. However, every day that goes by without your braces on is putting your surgery b...

Re: Wired shut and worried about relapse. So nervous that I picked the wrong doctor!

OP: You definitely worked yourself into an unnecessary tizzy. I read cases here and it's not uncommon to have internal rigid fixation and wires plus splint. A user here has an excellent blog detailing his experience. He had internal rigid fixation and wires plus splint. Here's his site and the speci...
From everything I read, the nerve grows back very very slowly, but unless it is completely severed, you will get sensation back. It can be crushed, for instance, but not severed. When my oral surgeon told me that I would most l...

Re: Many negative experiences

Hi Jeff: I'm almost 4 weeks post op from a L1+BSSO advancement. There's really not much to say about the surgery itself. It either goes well or doesn't, and that largely depends on the surgeon of course. Recovery is where you'll find many similar experiences. I don't think many people like talking a...
Orthognathic surgery is often indicated when orthodontics alone cannot correct your bite because of underlying skeletal deformity (as often seen in patients with an open bite). The surgeon you consult will have more information rega...

Re: Insurance benefits denied!!

My primary doctor attempted to get a referral for me but I was denied two times under my HMO plan. I switched to a very nice PPO Gold plan, which enabled me to go directly to my oral surgeon and he got me approved without any hassle. Food for thought.

Re: Dr Schoeman Kaiser Anaheim

No, sorry. I had a 3-piece L1+BSSO on Mar 1 and, though I'm very early in the recovery process, so far so good. My surgeon is Dr. Dale Stringer from Riverside, CA. You should consider having a second opinion by him. I've heard he's one of if not the best at this type of surgery. Very experienced. I ...

Re: Breathing after surgery

I'm 2 weeks post op from a 3-piece L1+BSSO. My experience was very positive in terms of breathing thus far, which I know is still very early in the recovery process. My first waking moment after surgery it felt like my nose breathing was improved 100%. It was a revelation. I was so elated. Before, I...

Re: Lots of numbness - scared

I'm only 2 weeks post op, but I have very similar numbness as you, OP. It's a very strange sensation to be lacking sensation.

Did the area of numbness get smaller over time? Or has the numbness pretty much been the same the whole time?

Re: Tooth sensitivity after surgery/numbness

I'm 3 weeks post op. I have numbness in my lower-right lips, lower-right chin, and some portions of my tongue and areas of my mouth and teeth towards the right side. The numbness area has moderately dissipated since immediately after surgery, but is still very noticeable. I have fairly regular sensa...
