Re: Lost sense of smell after double jaw surgery

Sorry this reply came so late. Yes my sense of smell and taste appears to have returned to 100%.

I really think it was the mouthwash - so be careful with the stuff!

Good luck with your senses - it's a real downer to lose one.

Re: Where was your bite after surgery

I'm one year since SARPE surgery and 9 months on braces top and bottom. My back teeth still do not close completely - the front touch well before they come together. There's a 2mm gap, give or take.

I think it could be another 3-6 months until I can chew with my back teeth...

Re: Lost sense of smell after double jaw surgery

Interesting that you are taking zinc. Have you heard about people losing their sense of smell after using Zicam (based on zinc) nose spray? Happened to a friend of mine. I believe he finally got his sense of smell back, but it took a long time. I don't think the oral zinc has the same issue, but I ...

Re: Lost sense of smell after double jaw surgery

Unfortunately I still have not regained a perfect sense of smell and taste. Some things do taste how they are supposed to, but others are alien still- the worst being mint, citrus, flowery smells (I used to like Earl Grey tea, but not so much now) and petrol, not that I'm drinking petrol! I have a f...

Re: 24hours post-SARPE

Hang in there - I had a rough ride too, 24h in intensive care unit and about a week in hospital. It does get better quite quickly after about 3-4 days. I would suggest to leave the kids at home until you feel happier as they pick up on it. However don't worry too much as they probably won't remember...

Re: Hate the results of my double jaw surgery - what do I do?

I agree there's nothing out of the ordinary but I also see that there are changes most noticeable on the width of your nose. I would just try to accept your new features as going through surgery again has its risks and the results may not be worth the pain and expense. But it's up to you at the end ...

Re: 3 months post-op

I would not worry about doing any damage using your own strength - your own senses would prevent yourself from doing any damage long before it occurred. Be more careful with external forces - no contact sports or any activities which could cause trauma to your jaw. If your gums are healing as expect...

Re: Lost sense of smell after double jaw surgery

Another month on and I have had X-rays and an MRI - but still no signs as to why I would have an altered sense of taste and smell, which has not improved. :yuck: It turns out during my SARPE they saw a Mucocele which they removed - still they don't think could be the cause. They think it's the mouth...

Re: Lost sense of smell after double jaw surgery

I still cannot taste or smell properly - I stopped using the mouthwash but it didn't make any improvement. Whenever I brush my teeth or smell something strong I get a disgusting taste sensation - sort of bitter, sour and metallic. I can't really describe it well as it's so weird. It's definitely not...

Re: Forgot to remove elastic bands while eating

I wouldn't worry - after 6 weeks bone formation will be quite strong around any plates or screws. I'm sure any aching will subside within a short while. If for some reason it doesn't get any better then I'd go for a checkup.

Re: The emotional side of the journey

I'm nearly 2 months post surgery and have an expander device fitted, I stopped turning it with the tool about 3 weeks ago. I am really sick of it now - I just want it out of my mouth. I don't think my jaw is ready to have it out but it would be great if I could just remove it for an hour or two of r...

Re: How big is my mandibula/maxila?

Before considering surgery I'd try to find some mens styling guru who may be able to give some tips on beard style, haircut, maybe a certain type of hat or work on neck and shoulder muscles. I'm no expert in this field but I'd try anything before going for surgery. TBH I didn't notice anything out o...

Re: Upper jaw moves up and down still?

Sorry I have no experience of this but if it was me I would be getting a second opinion and maybe even trying some alternative medicine approach before going in for more surgery (assuming it's not painful for you right now).

Re: Sarpe & the rotterdam palatal expander

I have something like that - to jack up my car!! All expanders SUUUCK! It's just something you have to get through. I feel like ripping mine out about 20 times a day. If there are spikes or sharp edges, ask for some wax to stick over those areas. Good luck and just remember to keep going, it will be...

Re: Lip Damage after SARPE? (pic included)

Here I've marked the area - this first pic is about 10 days after surgery: http://i66.tinypic.com/2mn2kk2.jpg And this is how it is now - it's left a V out of my bottom lip: http://i68.tinypic.com/2hnp01c.jpg I can only think that some tool cut right into the lip but can't imagine why or how that wo...
