Re: Correcting a crossbite: adult braces and double jaw surgery AHOY

I dont understand why you got double jaw surgery when MARPE is capable of expansion without surgery The MARPE was a fantastic alternative to a SARPE, but it wasn't sufficient in correcting the asymmetry of my lower jaw. My upper jaw was also tilted down towards the right, which the MARPE was also u...

Loss of taste and smell 8 weeks post-op

I had a BSSO and LeFort 1 done on May 11th. For the most part, my recovery has been fine, but in the past week, I've noticed that I can't taste or smell much of anything on the left side of my face. My surgeon is surprised that this happened so late in the recovery, but he thinks it might be a hemat...

Re: Correcting a crossbite: adult braces and double jaw surgery AHOY

Got my splint out after 7 weeks and immediately had a new archwire put in. My surgeon recommended a TPA to maintain the palatal expansion, but my orthodontist said my upper jaw is over-expanded, so he didn't put one in. On one hand, I'm happy to have less metal in my mouth, but on the other hand, I ...

Re: Overbite after underbite surgery :(

Currently 7 weeks post-op and my advice is that things will likely look better in the coming months-- my surgeon advised to not think too much about how things look until 4-6 months in. I didn't have a severe underbite, and it's difficult to tell with the splint still in, but my current bite looks a...

Re: PRE & POST-OP SUPPLY LIST---add your list or ideas

7 weeks post-op, so some of the things that turned out surprisingly useful: 1. Small, soft washcloths to use as bibs/napkins-- bought a pack of 24 on Amazon 2. Jaw bra with heat packs 3. Squeeze bottles with tips-- the kind you put ketchup in. Waaaay faster to use than syringes when it comes to eati...

Re: June/ july 2018 surgery buddies

Does anybody know on what does it depend if you wear a splint or not? I know my surgeon made a splint prior to the surgery but didn't require from me to wear it after the op. From my understanding, most cases will require a splint, especially if you get a segmental Le Fort where they split your upp...

Re: Correcting a crossbite: adult braces and double jaw surgery AHOY

I got my double jaw surgery done at UCSF on May 11th! The surgery was long (7+ hours), but otherwise went very smoothly. More specifically, I had a segmental Le Fort 1 osteonomy and BSSO. My upper jaw was moved about 4mm forward and expanded "a bit." My lower jaw was rotated to line up th...

Re: Correcting a crossbite: adult braces and double jaw surgery AHOY

Got a mold taken last week, so that brings my collection up to three! Just wanted to show the MARPE maxilla expansion progress over the past year and a half:

Re: Cost of your braces

$8700 - $2000 from insurance $6700 out of pocket in California (SF Bay Area). On top of that, another $1500 for a TAD-assisted expander.

Double jaw surgery will most likely (hopefully) be covered by insurance.

Re: SARPE .

It can be done, but it's rare. From the sound of it, most surgeons would opt for a SARPE if possible.

Here's a post from 2010 by chicago29 explaining the process:

Hello! It is good to "meet" another adult crossbiter(?) here :) I am so happy to see your progress, and will follow your thread :D Thanks! Quick update before the holidays: IMG_0835.jpg IMG_0897.jpg Now that the arches have straightened out, my bite has become much more open and the asymm...

Thanks! That's what I figured. There doesn't seem to be much mention of it elsewhere-- most people just say "it hurts at first, then goes away".

Delayed pain weeks after adjustments?

Has anyone else experienced tooth pain weeks after an adjustment? I typically experience soreness for a few days after an adjustment, then everything's fine for about 3-4 weeks before I start feeling soreness again-- nothing as severe as the initial pain, but enough to make me switch to soups for a ...

Re: Double Jaw Surgery and Extractions

Creating too much space would suck as well, since closing gaps is not an easy process, either. Would it be possible for your ortho to use TADs (temporary anchorage devices) to pull the teeth back and create more space? I was often told that I would need four teeth extracted due to overcrowding, but ...
