Yeah, I had a friend tell me:

"You didn't look bad with braces, you just look MUCH better without them"

and

"Your entire face looks completely different"

(She's only known me in braces)

"Retainers at night for life"

My ortho has a patient who has been wearing hers at night for the past 27 years. He keeps telling her that she should be fine, probably doesn't need to keep wearing them. But she says it gives her "peace of mind". So, he kind of acts like she's a nut for wearing them for so long, although ...

Debanded next week...

Assuming I can come up with the final payment. Information that I would have appreciated earlier: Your outstanding balance is due at your debanding (even if it's early). Maybe it's just my ortho? Just kind of lame that I have to come up with $1750 instead of my monthly payment of $75. Luckily, I hav...

Corn on the Cob (unbearable heebie jeebies from getting corn all over the front of my teeth)

Really moist white bread

Trail mix on the go is do-able, but "enjoying" it hours after the fact is crasty.

I have been recently. I started drinking coffee after I got braces (I know, I know. It's a necessary evil of work-study) and I felt like they were getting significantly dingier.

All better now, I think. Probably going to lay off it (and the coffee) from now on.

Poll: Do you smile in photos?

I'm sort of ashamed to say that I don't. I was told by an ex-braceface that she cringes every time she sees old photos from the braces era, so I figured I'd skip it too.

Harmful Flouride Levels in Instant Iced Teas

Jan. 25, 2005 -- Instant iced tea mixes may contain potentially harmful levels of fluoride, according to a new study. Researchers found some commercial iced tea mixes contain up to 6.5 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride, which is well above the 4 ppm maximum allowed by the EPA in drinking water and...

All of my top and bottom teeth touch when my mouth is closed!

(I had a serious crossbite and they used to only touch in two very awkward spots)

(Who eats pizza with a knife and fork? The crusts are there for a reason: handles) But seriously, don't let the "no-no" list scare you. It's for the kids who chomp away carelessly. Through my treatment I've had everything: gum, taffy, hard tacos. As long as you're careful and smart (which ...

Good question, I don't think everyone has to get elastics...and the treatment times definitely vary. I wore mine for two months, but I've heard of using elastics from a week (ortho's assistant's daughter) to almost the entire treatment time... I had them because I had this crazy crossbite. (Top pale...

Kudos from my Ortho

I'm just about finished with my elastics and my (rather stoic) orthodontist sincerely complimented me on my behaviour through the process! I wore my elastics about 90% of the time, which is apparently a lot more than most of the (kid) patients and I guess it shows. He said because of that and becaus...

My orthodontist's assistant told me that they were going to overcorrect intentionally. Since teeth always want to go back to their original places, especially as adults, it'll even out in the end. My midline is off to the right and I guess I'm going to wear elastics until it's over to the left a lit...

First, congratulations on the weight loss. Maybe consider saving up for caps if your case isn't super bad. The only way you'll know for sure is to get a consultation. In retrospect, I wish that's what I had done. They would have been less emotionally stressful since the results are immediate. Braces...

Little popping noises!

It's so weird! Does anyone(everyone?) else get these when they bite down? They don't really hurt and they're probably not audible to anyone else...
