No, it's a bit uncomfortable, but no pain. Every time I've had it done I have been tense and wanting it to hurry up, but thats more because of the sideways force used, along with the quiet but audible grinding/sanding noise, not because of any pain.

Elastics are a good thing, they really accelerate teeth movement. I found them irritating at first but they soon became the norm and I had no issues wearing them. I have recently been asked to stop wearing them after 5 months and actually kind of miss them!
