I'm baaaaaackkkkk (and worried about weird symptoms that might point to upper hardware issues)
Hi guys! It's been a long time and though I'm glad to see some old familiar screen names recently active, I've gotta tell you that I'm not super glad to be typing this out. I'm now in the midst of maybe my 3rd episode with these same progressive symptoms that have yet to be explained. Here's how it ...

Re: Double Jaw Surgery-Open bite and Recessed Jaw-I'm nervous!!!
So the years go by. I had a beautiful smile for about 7 years. Everyone thought so. And then I moved to southern California for college and endured extremely hot and dry weather, which eventually led me to have sinusitis, mouth breathing, and somewhere along the line, tongue thrusting. At age 22, I...

Re: Splint out/new wire in...on my anniversary. Will I be too sore to eat that night?
Hi! I was reading through topics where someone got their splint out and wanted to see how everything is going since you are a few months past that. I recently had a 3 piece lefort done on my upper jaw. I was supposed to have my splint removed at 4 weeks, but my orthodontist is on vacation the entir...

Re: Infection 2 weeks after surgery!!!
No worries, hon! We're all in this together! These surgeries, compared to most other surgical procedures, is still in its infancy in the US. It's up to us to support, guide, and share with one another since forums like this one are the best available source of information I've found in my years of r...

Re: Infection 2 weeks after surgery!!!
In my case the bone was healed sufficiently at 8 weeks, despite the infection being there for at least 5 weeks. They did have to remove a couple pieces of bone during the plate removal, I'm guessing because they weren't attached well or they were too infected to get clean enough to leave be. I had t...

Re: Infection 2 weeks after surgery!!!
My doc noticed signs of infection at 3 weeks. I was on antibiotics for an unrelated staph infection at the time, so we just did some watchful waiting. At 7 weeks it became obvious that I would need the plate at the site removed since the infection persisted. I started on a course of oral Augmentin a...

Re: Sense of taste lessened
I've been thinking of posting what you just did, I'm in the exact same situation. I had double jaw surgery about 9 weeks ago and I can't taste meat, salt, etc very well at all but anything sucrose is like it always was. I can taste tomato, onion and such just fine, so perhaps try dishes with those?...

Sense of taste lessened
I realized tonight, while eating dinner, that the reason I feel so excited and hungry while making meals only to take two bites and push the food aside is because I can't taste as well as I used to. A quick check of pubmed resulted in finding out that both the LeFort I and the BSSO are procedures kn...

Re: Has Anyone had Plate Removal?
Well, it's been a week since my plate and screws were taken out of my mandible on the right side. The swelling finally seems to have resolved and I'm symmetrical again. This incision was much longer than the original was, but it seems to have mostly healed already. The sutures are still there, still...

Re: Struggling with post-op mood
Thanks guys! My pep is coming back to my step, slowly but surely. Having to go back to being a swollen, painful mess at 2 months post-op really took it out of me. There's been some sunshine here for the first time in what feels like decades and I've been able to go soak up some fresh air and sun. I ...

Struggling with post-op mood
I expected a period of readjustment post-op, and to be somewhat less active and engaged in life for a while. But I'm struggling. It's been about 9 weeks of pretty much feeling yucky and waiting for life to get better. I'm a food lover and much of my pre-op socializing was food centered. Now that's n...

Re: Fibroma, anyone?
The plate, screws, and two pieces of bone were removed from my mandible yesterday. I'm very swollen on the right side of my face and it hurts some, but I'm up and about without feeling woozy or weak. There's no bruising or numbness. I'm still on oral antibiotics and will be for another 5 days. Takin...

Re: newbie here, question about insurance or cheap options
Magnolia mama, would you do the surgery if you had severe sleep apnea and the alternative is sleeping with a cpap for the rest of your life? That's my situation. I'm only 56. Well, that would depend. If you've exhausted every other option, then I'd say go for it. Before crossing the surgical bridge...

Re: Has Anyone had Plate Removal?
The plate and screws on my lower right were taken out in office today. They used IV sedation to knock me out, but without the usual fentanyl in an attempt to help me not spend the rest of the day puking. No puking, no nausea whatsoever, but the longer acting pain relief that usually comes from IV se...

Re: Has Anyone had Plate Removal?
I'm getting one of my mandibular plates removed this Friday because of infection. I'll be eight weeks (to the minute!) post-op from BSSO and a two piece LeFort I when it comes out. I'll follow up on this thread after the procedure in case anyone else wants to know what to expect with getting a plate...
