Re: How many surgeons did you consult?
I think it depends on the circumstances. My orthodontist gave me two possibilities: one surgeon didn't accept my insurance so I really only had one option. I consulted that surgeon (who is known as the best the state) and felt very confident, so I went with him. The surgeon is affiliated with the lo...

Insurance Approval!
Just wanted to check in and say my insurance finally approved by BSSO surgery! I'm in shock, because it seemed like they would NEVER approve it. I have BCBS, and was initially denied. Then on the courtesy review, which happens prior to an appeal, they decided they would approve it based on my TMJ an...

Re: April - June Surgery Buddies
I'm scheduled to get my surgery in mid-June, though my insurance hasn't approved it yet so it could get rescheduled. I'll be getting a BSSO and maybe genioplasty, to be decided at my preop. I'll be glad to get the surgery over with -- I've been waiting so long!

Re: Speech issues with splint?
I had my surgery without braces and I'm very happy with my jaw placement, for what it's worth, if you're considering the possibility of doing it without braces and the splint due to the nature of your job. That's great to know, I'd definitely prefer the non-braces route. We're you banded together u...

Speech issues with splint?
For those of you who have gone through the surgery and had to wear a splint, how much did it affect your speech? I'm worried because my surgeon said if I get the splint I'll have to wear it for six weeks, and I talk a lot at my job, both in person and on the phone. I work in a very professional envi...

Re: Newly braced
Hi abc, I actually haven't had my surgery yet. It's scheduled for early April, though I'm afraid my insurance may not cooperate, in which case the date would get pushed back. Hopefully not though because it does put off the fertility treatments. Has it been hard having braces and being pregnant? I'v...

Re: Advice on my situation?
I'd ask your orthodontist -- they may be planning to rescan your teeth after you use up all your current aligners. I have a 3-year treatment plan and my first round included 52 aligners. I recently got rescanned and am now on a set of 17. By the end of the 52 aligners, they weren't fitting quite so ...

Re: Time in braces before surgery
I only had Invisalign and it was for 11 months before double jaw surgery. I'm 5 weeks post op and my surgeon put in a wire around my teeth and tads in my gums for rubberbands. I think w wire and tads come out in 3 weeks. Elizabethrose - Are you happy with the placement of your jaw? I'm having secon...

Re: Time in braces before surgery
Did the surgeon wire your teeth together? Mine said he would do the surgery without braces but that he strongly preferred that I get braces to ensure my jaws are correctly placed during surgery. Since I'm going through so much to fix my jaw and bite, I want to make sure it's right, which is why I ag...

Re: Newly braced
Hi abc, welcome! Thanks for posting your story, as is it in some ways similar to mine, at least in terms of balancing teeth and expanding my family. I've been doing fertility treatments during my Invisalign treatment since I didn't know when I would be ready for surgery. Now I've found out I'm ready...

Time in braces before surgery
I just found out that my BSSO surgery will hopefully be in April if my insurance approves it in time. I have been doing Invisalign but am switching to braces now so that my surgeon can make sure my jaws line up properly. My question is for those of you who only got braces for surgery, how long did y...

Re: Getting braces in 3 days!
I would suggest wax, although your ortho may provide with some, and proxy brushes. ETA: Don't freak out time will go by faster than you think. Soon enough you will forget they are there. You will love your smile afterwards. Thanks! I'll pick up wax and proxy brushes on the way home. I'm trying not ...

Getting braces in 3 days!
I've been doing Invisalign for the past year or so, and will be getting lower jaw surgery (BSSO) in a few months. I guess I hadn't really thought things would happen so fast, but I met with my surgeon today and I need to go ahead and get braces on Thursday! I feel pretty unprepared. Are there any re...
