Re: Flying after surgery

I have to travel to get my surgery. For my first double jaw and genioplasty surgery, the surgeon said I could fly home as soon as I was released from the hospital, and I stayed in the hospital for 2 nights post op.

What should I expect at the initial surgical consultation?

I have my first consultation with the surgeon soon. I've had my braces for a few months. My orthodontist said they I will probably need surgery. Will the surgeon tell me for sure at this appointment? Will they take measurements? Also, has anyone experienced issues with their weight in regards to get...

Did your need for wax change after you were initially braced?

I've had braces for a couple months now and I have not needed to use wax once. My mouth/lips were never irritated or in pain nor did they develop any sores. Will it likely stay like this or is it likely that I will go through a time of having a lot of sores/pain? I know that I won't possibly be luck...

Re: Will tooth extraction ruin my face?

Not usually. Of course there will always be a few non-textbook cases, but for the most part it has good results. If there isn't enough room for all of the teeth, trying to straighten without first creating room can cause other problems, such as flaring of the teeth. If your teeth are severely crowde...

Re: Estimated time for braces

Around 2.5 years. I am only 2 months in so far. There has been some changes but I can't see it being any less time than that.

Re: Will the inside of my lips toughen up?

Personally, it works better if you alternate between wearing and not wearing wax. As in wear it for a day, don't wear it the next. That way, your lips get irritated the day you don't wear the wax but then when you do wear the wax, your lip has time to heal (and thus toughen up) instead of it just be...

Re: Did any of you get braces/invisalign for mostly cosmetic reasons?

I think a lot of people get braces for purely cosmetic reasons, even if their teeth are not that bad to begin with. For me, the way my teeth looked was the main factor in getting braces, even though I do have an overbite that will need to be corrected. If you want straight teeth, I would go for it. ...

Re: how long until you could chew food?

It definitely varies from person to person. I didn't have any problem eating at all and i still have not (I ate baked chips that night). Try taking some advil/tylenol 30-45 minutes before eating and you should be back to normal in two weeks at most.

Re: How aften are your adjustments?

Most of mine are 5 weeks apart (there is one weekday that is particularly convenient) but they usually aim for exactly a month. Any longer than that feels too long and the clear ligatures get so stained :(

Re: What should I buy before braced appt?

I would get a waterpik (I like the cordless plus model, but you don't need anything too powerful as it may hurt your already sensitive gums). I would also get some painkillers in case you need them. Other than that, I would actually wait until after your appointment. Your orthodontist may give you f...

Re: Poll: At What Age Did You Get Your Braces?

I am 18 and I should be getting braces on soon. However, because I still need teeth extracted and a few more preliminary appointments, I will probably be 19 before the braces are actually put on. :)
