Re: Which retainer after a treatment with extractions?
I've eaten a caramel apple with my permanent retainer. No harm done. Mind you, I've never been able to bite into an apple that hasn't been cored and sliced before now, so I haven't tried it out. As long as you're careful, you should be fine. I've also read that a lot of people have more trouble with...

Re: Is this true? Elastics question.
I doubt there is any truth in that...there are a lot of factors that determine how long treatment takes in general. I agree with oldfart that the patient is in full control of how well they stick to wearing elastics. Failing to wear them at all would be worse than taking them out to eat.

Re: Which retainer after a treatment with extractions?
I had my lower first premolars extracted. I have a lower permanent retainer and an Essix to go over it. My ortho said I really only need to wear my lower Essix at night, but I like to wear it as much as I wear my upper Essix because I too am paranoid about relapse.

Re: Jaw surgery require TMJ surgery at the same time?
If you dont mind me asking who was your surgeon? If you dont want to publicly say it you can PM me. The reason I'm asking is, most surgeons and people that have spoken with surgeons, all say that double jaw surgery can actually make TMJ problems worse, sometimes better, or no difference at all. Its...

I'd go out of my way to talk funny with that much acrylic. Are you still going with 24 hour wear?

Re: Attempt to fix a relapse..
I would meet with an orthodontist and oral surgeon for consultations along side the recommendations from the dentist. General dentists are great, but they aren't specialists in oral maxillofacial surgery or orthodontics.

Re: You know what the worst part of adult braces is?
I always got carded before and during braces. I started braces at 24 though. Since my braces came off two weeks ago, I haven't been carded at all.

Re: Clenching teeth with braces on
Clenching at night can be a response to high levels of stress. That might not be your case...I can tell you that I was a grinder before braces and definitely went through several stages of clenching. It didn't affect my treatment time at all. I had a flexible night guard for the first few months of ...

Re: teeth moving quickly, worried they'll fall out
Just know that there is risk of root resorption with braces. If your teeth move too quickly, you could have problems down the line. Make sure your orthodontist and dentist are paying attention to the health of your roots throughout treatment. Without healthy roots, your teeth will fall out.

Re: Worried About Permanent Retainer; Permanent Retainer Questions
Just having gotten braces again, you're pretty early asking these questions...but here goes: Will it hurt? Not at all. What foods can you eat? You can eat whatever you want, you just have to be careful biting into hard or crunchy things. You can chew gum and eat lollipops, just don't try biting into...

Re: Time off post surgery - doable or delusional?
I could have gone back to work at 2 weeks post op, but I have the comfort and flexibility of working from home. Which is exactly what I did when I went back to work at 3 weeks post op. I was still pretty swollen, bruised, and I couldn't really speak all that clearly with the rubber bands. Not to men...

Re: Standard Hawley vs Wrap Around Hawley
How is your speech with that much of your palette covered by acrylic? I have upper and lower Essix retainers, so my palette isn't too obstructed. The most trouble I've had so far comes with sh- words...and it's not super noticeable unless I'm really tired.

Re: Will I ever be happy
And so it begins... Just eaten for the first time. Pain isn't bad, just feels tight. No wire poking me or anything, so far so good. My only concern right now is the worry of breaking a wire or a bracket. I have wire going across an extraction site, it scares me that it may snap. I had my lower firs...

Re: I think I swallowed piece of braces
If you didn't feel it go down, you probably won't feel it come out. A bit crude, I know...but truthful. I swallowed a separator about 3 months into treatment. Didn't feel a thing.
