Repairing a broken retainer
I did exactly what my orthodontist told me not to do and left my retainer on my desk, then stepped on it. The plastic broke cleanly in half right down the middle. Do orthodontists ever repair these things (my grandfather could do it, and he didn't need 20 years of education), or am I looking at an a...

Re: Active treatment?
So, I wanted to follow-up on this a year later. After 24 months and one extraction, my teeth have progressed as you see in the pictures below. Unsurprisingly (kinda expectedly), after making my final payment last month, the ortho took a look and said he wants to take them off in the next week or two...

Re: Reconsidering Jaw Surgery - is it too late?
I paid $6500 for a functional orthodontist who could straighten my teeth and fix my 10mm overbite/overjet without extractions or jaw surgery, which I refuse to do. Considering how much more expensive jaw surgery is, it seems to be a wise move anyway. After two years with just braces and only one ext...

Re: Braces 10mm Overjet
I had 3 or 4 teeth that really poked out that were a lot less noticeable after 2-3 months

Can't make last payment...
$6220 later, I have one final payment to go. Lovely. Well see, I've been dirt broke and barely making the rent the past month, and I haven't got a dime to pay this guy. He's good at what he does, but he and his office staff are -not- the type of people I'd ever ask accommodation of. One of my bracke...

Re: 6 month trip
I have at least 5 or 6 more months of treatment left, but have no problem putting it on pause for a bit. I just wonder what usually happens when someone needs to interrupt treatment like this?

Re: Another newb metal mouth to be
Well that certainly took a while -- welcome to the club :-) Having braces ain't so bad - you'll get over it in a week :-) You'll soon find it's just a small inconvenience (...albeit disgusting after a meal). And hey, if you're fashion-forward, you can pick funky lig colors and rock the teeth jewelry...

6 month trip
I am leaving for a 6 month trip to the other side of the country in May and will still have many months of treatment left (I'm paid off next month)... things are mostly on-track, no more extractions and no major adjustments for the foreseeable future. So, do I just wave adios and pick back up in 6 m...

Re: How loose did your teeth get?
I was concerned about this also on my lower jaw - my front 4 teeth (now 3...) are a bit wobbly, and a few molars can be pushed up and down. They can clearly move, but they feel firmly in place with the wire on. I think this is mostly due to them raising(protruding)/lowering(sinking) more than latera...

Active treatment?
My orthodontist says I am looking at 15-18 months "active treatment" - which obviously means things will be moving around during that time. Does this mean the braces come off then, or will they remain on for a bit longer to hold everything in place? I'm still waiting for elastics and have ...

Re: Tooth jewelry!
They very rarely cause me discomfort - even adjustments don't hurt - and the only things I can't eat are nuts, corn-on-the-cob and chewing gum, none of which I ate frequently anyways. I carefully ate a bagel yesterday for the first time since getting braces, and oh my was it tasty =) My ortho bonded...

Re: Weight & Braces
I weighed 187 pounds on January 17th 2013 when I got my first appliance in... in the 5 months that have passed, I am now at 164. In January I had to buy a few pairs of pants 1" wider than usual. Last week I had a few holes punched into my new, shorter belt, because it became too loose  I h...

Tooth jewelry!
Call me crazy, but I rather like having braces... I think of them as fashion accessories :-) I always needed them badly as a kid but my parents couldn't afford them... I was jealous of my classmates who had perfect teeth and got braces, while I was left stuck with these contorted chompers. There was...

Re: 25 year old brace faced herbst wearer :-S
I refuse extractions or jaw surgery, so I am seeing a functional orthodontist instead. I think he wants to give me a twin block device, but I know I won't keep it in. I wonder if the herbst (or its variants) performs a similar function and my ortho would consider that instead of twin blocks... By th...
