Dan, there are no materials that are used for lower bond-strength bondings. You can perhaps consider having these bondings done in a lighter shade now to try to limit the need for replacement bonding later. Your dentist will always try to preserve your enamel, since it is essential for the long-term...

Your Orthodontist is correct to suggest you only wear them at night now. If you feel they fit very tightly when you put them in at night, you must contact him again to review your retainer schedule, just to be on the safe side.

The best you can do is to avoid food products that can cause this kind of discolouration. I advise mouth washes like Peroxyl that contains hydrogen peroxide to improve things a bit. Do NOT take a big mouthful and rinse for at least 2 minutes.

I advise my patients to use any liquid soap (washing-up liquid or even hand soap) and to scrub them gently with a stiff denture brush and COLD water. I do not recommend any other products, including Steradent, bleach or toothpaste. Do not store your retainers in water.

Your removable retainers will start to 'wear out' after a few months and therefore a new retainer should be made available on a regular basis. I advise my patients to have them replaced every 3 - 4 months and also to wear them every night if possible for the rest of their lives. I will suspect that ...
