Re: July 2011 Buddies?

I thought most of my swelling had gone away a bit after 2 weeks, but depending on the person it can extend into a few weeks, months, etc. Anna, the point of heat is to help stimulate the area with bloodflow and perhaps speed up nerve recovery. Here's a link simply explaining heat vs. ice. http://ort...

Re: best way to reduce swelling in the first few days post o

For swelling: - Jaw sling/jaw bra with constant ice for the first 3-4 days - Alternate with heating pad after 4 days - Drink as much water as necessary(2L +, this is the most important step) - Sleep elevated with your head above your heart, therefore some decline from 90 degrees is possible. - Lymph...

Re: Morphine side effects?

I was prescribed liquid Codeine after my surgery. However it was only needed maybe once after my return home. Pain levels vary person to person, hopefully you won't need too much.

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!

Hey TRC, I feel for you having the splint in for so long. I had it for about 3 weeks and it hampered any sort of chewing I could do, and in turn limited healing. Nutrition is very important, hopefully you can start eating properly soon. I'm 10 weeks post op. Going to the gym 3 times a week as hard a...

Re: Has anyone had a le fort 1 and septoplasty at the same t

Hey Sam, I had my lefort 1 with a deviated septum straightening. My septum wasn't as deviated though, probably just a hit in the nose from soccer in year's past. My surgeon went ahead and did it without me knowing but I'm happy about it. There's nothing really exceptionally different with recovery. ...

Re: Post-Jaw Surgery Appearance Change?

... The main reason I want this is because of my bite problems/chewing problems so hopefully everything will work out! I was just worried I would look really weird and my friends wouldn't recognize me and think that I got plastic surgery or something, when it was actually just something for functio...

Re: Help with saliva issue!

Drinking fluids helps reduce the thickness of saliva - make sure to hit 2L a day. Drinking something carbonated helps break down the phlegm in the throat. Take hot showers and allow the steam to loosen up the phlegm. Swallow it if you have to. Coughing it up was too difficult personally because my n...

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!

Hey all,

I'm roughly 8 weeks post op and made a video today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyFWS3TB ... ideo_title

Lip muscles are still a bit tight, but otherwise my mouth feels okay. Eating is now soft foods but in the tougher range.

Re: Best protein powder

I agree with DRG, that weight loss should be monitored by having a solid diet of carbs/fats/proteins. Also it is a major myth that using protein powder helps people put on weight or bulk up. No matter how much protein you drink, if you're not working out you won't put on any muscle which incurs a lo...

Re: How long was your mouth wired/banded shut?

Hey meancactus, Different surgeons do things differently. I've read of people being banded from anywhere of not at all to 6-7 weeks. I got unbanded(where I couldn't open at all) after 2 weeks and was then onto elastics. I had my splint off the week after(week 3) and still on elastics. I'm now on wee...

Re: Starting to chew again

Hey Rizzie, I'm also a little over 6 weeks post op and chewing is still quite foreign. I find however if you just keep introducing more and more soft foods to your diet, the constant chewing will help wake up your jaw and chewing muscles. I think it's helped me get my mouth open. I used to only open...

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!

6 weeks post op now. Energy level is back to normal. I can chew foods but they still need to be on the soft side. I haven't really tested my chewing ability out too much. Mouth only opens as far as a finger and chewing is up and down. I also have found I don't eat as much since I believe my stomach ...

Re: unhappy with widening nostrils

As mentioned, the change in nose is just a different look. I've gotten opinions on my nose and people just say it's 'cute.' As a guy it's not what I'm going for but I've noticed that it is going down over time with the swelling in the upper lip, which tends to puff it up. The widening has actually m...

Re: Completed LeFort I Osteotomy

Hey Erin, Great videos, I think without braces you look really really good. How big is your overbite? When you mean overbite do you mean your teeth are aligned that far off? Or that your top jaw just seems that much more dominant? It can't be the latter in my opinion because your jaw looks fine. I t...
