Re: Nose swelling

How swollen it was depended on how far after surgery you're talking; but it was pretty swollen for a while. At the stage you are now it was very large. My nostrils also looked massive for some time. At it's worst my nose was so swollen all the gunk in my pores was pushed outwards (jaw surgery... an ...

Re: Nose swelling

My nose was actually the last thing to stop being swollen completely. Even 3 months after the operation it would periodically swell up again, and it was certainly still pretty swollen after a month even though the rest of me didn't look particularly swollen anymore. If you didn't know me before surg...

Re: Is this normal or strange behavior for an orthodontist?

I've seen an awful lot of medical professionals in my time; and the range of informality and friendliness has varied hugely. You get some that want 50,000 nurses present just to examine a hand, and others who are far more casual about things. My maxiofacial surgeon gave me his mobile number (incase ...

Re: 6 week and 8 week picture update

For the record, your nose looks fine to me. However, my nose was changing shape for about 3 months afterwards; and a certain portion of my cheeks still very occasionally puffs up 8 months later! That's despite the fact I looked fairly normal from about 4 or 5 weeks onwards.. I just shifted between d...

Re: Sinuses still swollen three weeks after bimax?

I seem to recall my sinues were still pretty swollen at that stage; especially in the mornings, even though I was still sleeping upright in a chair until about a week five or six.

Re: Did you have an easier time of talking after the surgery

My speech definitely improved after-surgery, and after braces. Before I had braces I had quite a speech impediment, I couldn't make 'm' or 'p' sounds and all my speech sounded quite garbled because my teeth stuck out so much I couldn't move my lips properly. I was supposed to have speech therapy at ...

Re: 6 months in thith damn retainer......REALLY?!....6 MONTH

I had a Hawley retainer after my first round of braces (had to have them on again for jaw surgery), it was terrible at first. I couldn't swallow in it for about a week. I went back to see my orthodontist about it after a couple of days and had to come into the surgery holding a kitchen roll to mop u...

Re: Would braces help a 12mm overjet - saw 3 ortho & am conf

I'd say it depends whether you think you'd be satisfied being left with a 6mm overjet or not. It doesn't sound an ideal result. I had a 12 mm overjet pre-treatment, but in my case only about 2 or 3mm of that was down to jaw position, the rest was because my teeth were sticking out of my mouth at an ...

Re: Will 5mm lower jaw advancement change my face? (BSSO)

The main purpose of my surgery was to correct a-symmetry and vertical maxillary excess, but my lower jaw was advanced by about 3mm at the same time. I wasn't really expecting it to make any difference, and it hasn't from the front, but it made a far bigger difference to my profile (for the better) t...

Re: Braces removed yesterday and I have a question.

Could the ease with which you can floss be an illusion because you're not having to manipulate the floss around the wires and brackets? You should really ask your orthodontist about the retainer, but for me personally, I only drink water with my Essix retainer in (incase any liquid seeps in between ...

Re: Gingival Overgrowth

Obviously I can't say what will happen for you or not, I can only say what happened to me. I had REALLY bad gingival overgrowth pre-surgery, however, it rectified itself after my operation since my gums weren't exposed all the time (I couldn't shut my lips to cover them before, and the braces just m...

Re: Study Finds Harmful Bacteria on 50% of Retainers

I just got my braces removed today, and I've been given a retainer. I find a certain irony in this article since the dental nurse had a bit of a huff when I wanted to wash my hands before checking whether I could take my retainer in and out or not! (I did wash them in the end, and my orthodontist le...

Re: Feeling the panic, looking for support. La Forte 1 surg

I had a Le Fort I last year (along with an operation on my bottom jaw). It wasn't fun, but it was completely worth it and not as bad as I thought it might be. There was never really any pain; in fact I got into an argument with the nurse the next morning because she was trying to make me take morphi...

Re: when do visits get easier?

I'm going to have to be really depressing and say that for me, both times round with braces, the pain has generally got worse as time has progressed due to the wire getting thicker. This is especially true towards the end of the first time round, since I had to have this horrible, thick wire (appare...
