your retainer looks perfect to me.
my retainer does not cover my canines all the way to the gum either, and it feels just fine.
As long as your teeth are not moving and the soreness goes away in a week or so, I don't think you have a problem.

I had Hawley retainers, I hated them because they did not keep my teeth in place.
Now I have Essix retainers, and my teeth have not moved at all.
I advice everybody to get the essix retainers and then you won't have to worry about a thing.

I got debraced 2 days ago. I have lower permanent retainer and also upper and lower essix retainers. I am supposed to go back in 8 weeks, until then I am supposed to wear them 24/7.
