I know what you mean. Mine are still tender and the brackets make biting awkward, so I'm strictly on to the knife and fork. Can pose a bit of a challenge though. Especially at sporting events, but I found that if you want that Dodger dog bad enough you can break off bite sized bits with your fingers...

First of all -- thank you for your service!

Don't worry about the smirkage...it's probably much less than you think -- a lot of them have been in braces before too.

Enjoy the pasta -- Italy is one of my favorite places in the world!

Go for it -- but do get more than one opinion before starting. Between the $$ and time investment, this is not an enterprise to be undertaken lightly.

I've been braced since April and I'm 58.

Wish I'd done it sooner? Of course.

Glad I'm finally doing it now? Absolutely!

My mom is doing the whole mea culpa over NOT get my teeth straightened when I was a kid. My folks never had the money for that and I knew it. Knew it then and know it now. I'm 58. My dentist has been after me for 7 years to get braced. He's over the moon that I finally took that step. And seven mont...

Tickled me to read this.

I'm always telling my husband that each visit brings a new set of things to get used to. Occasionally somewhat medieval, but so far always mercifully brief in duration.

And at just 6 months in, I can see/feel such changes!!

The process is absolutely fascinating to me.

Cheer up Soph! I can't offer any info about the nance...no experience. But I was concerned about the speech thing too, because my job requires a LOT of public speaking. I find that at each stage of the process (initial uppers, then the bite plate, now no more bite plate but lowers are in) I have had...

Love teh Blistex too.

Haven't changed my makeup/accorizing except to be very very careful putting on the lipstick, lest it stain.

But, without lipstick I haven't much of a mouth. I don't want to end up looking like the guy in the James Bond flicks.

My ortho is terrific, but then so are all of the staff. I've been very happy with the service so far...very prompt and considerate. Had a chain slip early on and they took me in straight away. Fortunately one of my hobbies is jewelry making, so I have the requisite tools, but I sure hope I never hav...

I'd sure LIKE to be losing more weight (only about 5 pounds so far), but the things I'm comfortable eating seem to be pretty calorie dense. <sigh> Had my first adjustment today -- got new archwire and tighter chain. Little headachy, but a couple of glasses of white wine and a good nights sleep shoul...

Ceramic on my 'social 8' (love that phrase!). I'll be getting metal on the lowers in a couple of months.

Have a bite plate in for now, in preparation, and will be quite happy to lose those sssssssssibilant esses!

Good for you -- I waited til late 50s My dentist said "If you'd done it when I first told you to, you'd be done by now" Thanks. I hadn't done the math! One big plus about doing it later in life...I think that pain is relative, and relative to some of the experiences I've already had,...

Aloha! Got my top braces 4/2/09, just a couple months after my 58th birthday. Been fighting it for years, but have capitulated to spare what's left of my crowns and gums. It's not so bad. Not as painful as I expected. More a nuisance than anything. Two forks full of food and I feel like the Hanging ...
