I Had ceramics, and surgery--one of the brackets did come loose during the surgery, however, that bracket has come loose before, due to being attached to a crown--they just don't stick as well to crowns. Anyway, it was no big deal and the surgeon never said it would create any problem.

Sdawdy--sorry, I didn't check back here, but it looks like you answered your own question about how hard it is to talk with the retainer. I wouldn't be much help, as I was given an Invisilign retainer for the uppers--talking is very easy!--and still don't have the lowers.

Oh, yeah--as for the swelling: I was told most of it was going to be gone (75%) by around 2 weeks. It took much longer for me, but I am 46. The younger you are the quicker you will likely heal. It also is really an individual thing--your general health makes a difference in your recovery too.
