Thanks everyone. To update, I've been wearing my retainer basically 24/7 on days that I don't work and 16 out of 24 hours on days that I do work. When I take them out for eight hours then put them back in, they feel only the slightest bit tight and there is no pain. The reason that I don't wear it t...

One year of retainer-wearing already behind me... or not?

I had my braces removed yesterday (YAY!!) and was given my retainer today. My ortho told me, just like he tells every single one of his patients, to wear my retainer nonstop for one year. The thing is... for one of the three years I was braced, my wire was not adjusted and my teeth were not moved be...

ohmyjaw: I asked my orthodontist those questions, and his responses were pretty unclear. I was actually unsatisfied with him as my ortho because he never told me anything and our discussions were always brief. Maybe he thinks I am too young to understand or that I don't care? Anyways, from what I un...

Opted out of surgery... big mistake?

First of all, I will give you a summary of my treatment: - Before treatment, had an anterior open bite of about 4-5 mm (I could stick my tongue partially through while biting down) and a palate that was too narrow by about 6 mm. The arches of my teeth were fairly straight. No gaps or teeth sticking ...

I have an open bite, too. So far, I have had lower braces on for one year and upper braces on for six months. During the time that I had only my lower braces, I also a rapid palate expander device (which was the worst part of my treatment so far). I had SARPE surgury about a year ago, and then had t...

When I had my expander, I always turned it myself even though my surgeon told me that one of my parents has to. I think that it's way easier and convenient to do it on your own once you get the hang of it. When I first started turning it I used a flashlight and mirror, but after awhile I hardly even...

I have an open bite (I can't close my teeth in the front) and I had a narrow palate, but that has been corrected with an expander and SARPE surgery. My teeth weren't really that crooked, but I didn't have a "bite". I have to get surgery in 6-12 months to correct the open bite. I can't wait...

Can braces be removed for a special occasion?

I'm graduating from high school this year, and I REALLY don't want my braces on for grad, pictures, etc. I feel self-conscious about them, and I can't smile with my mouth closed because it looks really weird. I have traditional metal braces and by grad I will have had them on for 10 months. I would ...

Hello. I had to get surgery in order to expand my palate, but I'm pretty sure that there have been cases of successful palate expansion without surgery in adults. From what I know, it can be risky and often results in the teeth moving outwards instead of the palate. My surgeon explained to me that t...

Hello everyone. I had this surgery about 5 months ago, and let's just say it did NOT go very well for me. I don't remember having much pain, but I had a lot of swelling and bruising. I threw up a lot of blood, and had a non-stop nosebleed for about one and a half days. I also lost about 5 pounds, wh...

Has anyone had their jaw wired shut?

If so, what is it like? I think I have to have mine wired shut for a few weeks when I get surgery on my upper jaw to fix my open bite. What happens if you have to throw up? How do you eat?
