Sounds like we might have the same type. I can't remember what mine are called but they're ceramic 3ms that are self-litigating. On mine, it looks like there's a thin piece of metal holding the wire on either side of each bracket. This is the self-litigating piece. If you read the boards, you'll see...

I just saw this thread and felt like maybe I could contribute some insight or at least share my story. I'm in my 2nd go around with braces. 12 years ago I was braced at the age of 12 and was still very much sucking my thumb. Luckily my habit didn't interfere with my social life too much as I mostly ...

Well I think I've narrowed my appliance down to a Rick-a-nator. Based on pictures and some descriptions I've seen that seems to be it. It's like a skate park ramp in my mouth! Seriously, it used to make my bottom teeth but right up against the bottom of my top teeth, thus forcing an open/almost unde...

Bite Plate and Rubber Bands

I'm in month 5 of braces and things have been going swimmingly until... the dreaded bite plate. I assume that's what I have after doing some research on the boards. It's a plastic piece that sits behind my front upper teeth and is permanently attacted to my molar bands. I do have to say that after h...

I haven't been on in awhile since everything had been going great. Just to recap: I got top braces on in January '09 and the game plan was to have top braces only for 6 months, then an appliance to change my bite and the top braces for 6 months and finally another 6 months with both top and bottom b...

Both my current ortho and my previous ortho team (metal the 1st time, ceramic now) have said that as long as the gum is sugarless, I'm chewing smaller pieces, and I don't bite down on a hard shell that it's ok. My current Dr. even suggested chewing it to reduce my clenching and TMJ issues. I think e...

Tommm, I've been following your story on here and see that you're anxiously awaiting movement. I thought that I would report that 2 days shy of a month, I've had significant movement in the past 2 days. The lateral incisor that was my biggest complaint on my top set of teeth was tipped outwards (act...

I am a chronic clencher/grinder. Here are a few things I've found that help: I chew gum as well. My ortho told me that as long as it was sugarless and I didn't bite down as soon as I put it in (let it warm up a little) I could safely chew a smaller peice of it. I really like the Orbit whitening ones...

I echo the sentiments of previous posters. I'd also like to suggest that if you're worried about speech impediments the best defense is practice. I have ceramic uppers only and just got them 3 weeks ago and have noticed that I tend to sound the same but I notice that I move my bottom jaw much more t...

Congrats, Chicklets! You must be very excited. I'm just starting round two of the journey but already I've been concerned about some staining. I was drinking orange soda the other day and my teeth looked so orange. I was away from home and didn't have a brush with me at the time so I had some water ...

I'm in week 3 with braces and trust me, it definitely gets easier. You just have to be more considerate of what you eat. For instance, you can eat a burger but it's probably best (and easier) to cut it up with a fork and knife first. Eating smaller bites helps you to bypass your front teeth thus pre...

You may want to consider going to a dental school for treatment (maybe the local university?) I have a few friends who have done this over the years and their results have been very comparable to those of people who went to some of the most expensive orthos in town. The one drawback is you might not...

Wow! I'm glad that there's someone else who can relate to be "so and so's daughter." I have worked during the summers and now full time at the same office as my mom and some of the people here have known me for 10-15 years (I'm 23 now). A few of them may even remember my first go around wi...

I hear the price varies GREATLY depending on where you live. I live in Ohio so our prices are probably a little cheaper than either of the coasts or large metro areas. All total it was $5900 but my insurance luckily covers $2k.

Good for you, Rachel! I considered backing out after my consultation (even after paying a deposit) but I guess I knew that if I didn't do it now, in 1, 5, 10 years I would consider it again and by that point I could have been done or almost done.
