I'm going to try this too ...

http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Clean-Wh ... a-Retainer

Distilled white vinegar (+ baking soda) solution x 2 weekly.

Hopefully a cheapo alternative in these cash strapped recessionary times.

Hi there Thanks for the suggestion of SonicBrite - will give that a try. SonicBrite manufactuerer says: Finally there is a product that disinfects your dentures while completely removing stains, and calculus build-up. Dentures, retainers, partials, and mouth guards are made of porous materials. The ...

lower hawley retainer - plaque build-up - yeuchhhh!!!!

Hello All I've just noticed that my lower Hawley retainer has some hardened plaque welded on to it - ewwwwww! Can't afford to visit my rip-off ortho to get it removed. Have read on the net re: soaking it in white spirit vinegar and removing the plaque with a tooth pick. Soaked it in vinegar for a fe...

ewwww. I don't have my lower one yet.

So, did you start off with one retainer and then have to wear an upgrade?

I guess the multi colours try and detract from the nastiness.

Blimey, years of braces and now a gob full of more metal.

:x

Sorry, me again, folks.

Just had a thought ...

okay, is this a dumb question?

Is it possible for my retainer to be adjusted to knock the flared front four teeth back a tad?

Thanks for replies. Apologies that my posts are negative - that's just the way it is, I'm afraid. I will try and get a photo organised so you can see what the score is. My bite is ok and my side and back teeth mesh together well, however the front lower arch is receded and smaller than it should be ...

Thanks, Meryaten, for posting those pics. Mine looks sorta like that - but no funky colours. Wires that fit over the molars too. Hey, I wish I had those colours, it would cheer things up a bit. Mine looks nasty because it's transparent. Is that the face of a seal on the upper retainer. I can see eye...

Thanks to you All for cyberlistening and empathising.

Only other braces wearers could comprehend the rotten sinking feeling and disappointment.

Guess I just have to go through a period of adjustment and accepting the way my teeth now are.

It really is a crap sitch.

Hello Mogwai (I like your name!) "if your ortho wasnt fully aware of the consequences of taking out one of your teeth she should have sought a second (more informed) opinion herself!" It wasn't her (current ortho) who extracted it. It was the first perio/ortho who I went to. He is a period...

Thanks

Thanks for the v.useful advice, Meryaten. I suppose it must be a Hawley - ortho didn't mention the name. It's a pretty ugly object. The plastic part doesn't rest comfortably against the roof of my mouth - (will mention it to ortho at next appt). Saliva collects inbetween. Nice. Feels like a huge boi...

nothing can be done

Hi there No, sadly nothing can be done. My lower arch is 5mm or so smaller in circumference (the space the removed incisor would take up if it had been *pushed back into the arch* instead of being removed). Nothing can be done to expand out the lower arch - unless I have it opened up and an implant ...

Hello All Apologies for the non-positive post, people, but I am beyond disappointed with my teeth, they are a real mess. If I take a photo with my phone camera, it won't show the problem clearly, the quality is not good. It's a long ortho story - synopsis - I had a lower incisor extraction, the inci...

Q to Brits - nasty retainer - difficult to wear

Dear All I've had my upper brace removed - lower to be removed in about a month. Ortho has given me this awful retainer to wear during evenings and at night - it's wire across the teeth with a nasty plastic section that fits into the roof of the mouth and makes me want to throw up as saliva collects...

Thanks so much for replies.

Will read and post again shortly.

Looks like I'm going to have to go into battle with my ortho, starting with a strongly worded letter.

Thanks, Chris, for your suggestions. Ortho has said she can't extract an upper tooth as it would affect my profile and flatten my face. It's so obvious to me now that the lower incisor shouldn't have been extracted. Think I'm going to have to get another full ortho opinion (at great expense) and pre...
