Swelling four months after?

Hi, I had lower jaw surgery back in December. Two metal plates inserted in either side. As some may remember it went wrong (break in wrong place) but they fixed it and that particular side is fine. However the other side still looks puffed out like i have been punched in the face! There was swelling...

In the UK usually in supermarkets such as boots, tesco's you can get pasta salad's sometimes mixed with tuna or chicken with herbs and mayonnaise. i've been eating these 4 days post op. much preferable to endless soup and yoghurt and surprisingly easy to eat. They will also help with maintaining wei...

Hi all, Good news - the surgery was a success :D The right jaw fragment has been 'locked' back into placed and fits how it should into the hinge (condular) joint. My surgeon said it was the most difficult operation of it's type he has ever had to do but was happy with the results. Phew! The night on...

Thanks again all for good wishes, it means a lot. I've just been for another visit to my surgeon, he had the diagrams from the CT scan. It turns out the right hand jaw has slipped out of it's socket (or condular joint), In addition to the incision below my ear on the jaw line there is likely to be a...

Meryaten,

hard to see any scarring on that picture...that's good to hear about the facial scarring...makes me feel better.. i'm just thinking the worse case scenario all the time at the moment due to the initial mess-up.

ohmyjaw, thanks for your good wishes. The risk is due to the surgeon having to access the jaw and fix it from the outside, and the proximity to the nerve of my mouth. the risk is small but it can happen. you are correct standard jaw surgery (or BSSO) usually only carries the 1 in 10 risk of permanen...

Hi FuzzyPants, Unfortunately (more bad news lol) the incision is taking place on the outside of my face just below the ear at the top of the jaw line (about 1 and a half inches) so i'm going to be scarred. he said it should be hardly noticeable after 6 months...but i've lost faith in anything my sur...

update

Just been to visit the ortho again, As I suspected would be the case I'm going to need more surgery :( :x :( booked in for 10 days time. involves accessing the jaw from the outside and fixing the break. the elastics aren't doing the job. i've only been wearing them for a week. think it was a case of...

Thank you loulou123, and all that offered words of comfort in this thread, it means a lot. It's hard to explain things to friends/relatives as they don't understand, as much as they try. It sounds like you went through an awful lot - the plate infection sounds like a nightmare! I'm glad you have cam...

I go next Monday. Have to see him every week for the next month or so. I'm not sure if it's how the bone will heal, or where it heals that is the problem. at the moment i can only bite together on the left side, the right side it's impossible, i'm amusing due to the unfortunate break. It's hard to s...

Thanks Meryaten, According to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16125398 the risk of an unfavourable split is 0.9% it only happened in 12 patients out of 1264 used in this study. Feel angry and distressed add this onto 30 long weeks in braces i can safely say I wish i had never gone ahead with the ...

I've just been to visit my ortho... turns out on the right hand side the brake actually went wrong and the whole of the upper jaw of the bone has been removed from the side of the face. so it's no longer attached at the top, simply hanging loose :( . I'm having to wear strong elastics that i have to...

Thanks Kerry :) Worst case scenario would have to going under the knife again...especially as he said he would have to go via the outside ! I have swelling on the right hand of my face but overall the swelling isn't too bad he commented on this too. I can actually feel the double break on the outsid...

Hi all, I had BSSO surgery on Thursday on my upper joint to cure fix overbite. I was really worried about the surgery but all went well, or so i thought! However when my surgeon came to see me on the ward the next day he advised me the jaw on the right side had broken in two places instead of one! :...
