Amalgam is a silver/mercury mixture which is used for fillings in decayed teeth. Low-copper amalgam usually consists of mercury, silver, tin, copper and other trace metals. Dental amalgam fillings are strong, inexpensive, and long-lasting, so they are less likely to break than some other types of fillings. Amalgam fillings are usually called silver fillings because they have a shiny silver appearance.
