Well, it's been a long time coming I suppose….I’ve been on the boards since August 2005, but I’ve finally got around to it, so here goes…My Story….Apologies in advance, as it’s very looooong & rambling though, with photo-overload. Sorry:

This is ME!…

And this is my house….

These are my cats….

And this is my mouth!.... (well, how it used to look anyway!)

For those of you who don’t already know, my name is Lucy, I’m 27 and live in Essex, UK with my other half of 9 years & 2 elderly black cats called Reapie & Bertie!

Well, my braces story begins about 2-3 years ago, I suppose. My teeth were fine – no decay/fillings and were lovely and straight. Then, totally unexpectedly, my teeth started to erode/decay. The first teeth to decay/erode were the canines.

It was at that point it was discovered that my canines were the retained baby canines and that my adult ones were impacted in my palate. I was sent to hospital to have tests to determine what was causing the decay/erosion. It was then discovered that I had acid reflux and a weak oesophageal motility. Due to other health problems, I also had started taking diuretic meds, which made my mouth dry and accelerated the decay. In a way though, I feel this was a blessing in disguise. Had I not have got these problems, then my impacted canine issue would never have come to light.

Anyway, the decay/erosion has so far been kept under control by the meds and a rather obsessive OTT cleaning regime, :-} but I have fillings in virtually every tooth now! :?

I originally was referred to a local hospital for an assessment with the oral surgery department in 2003. I was shocked to discover that orthodontic treatment was the likely remedy – so they referred me to another local hospital’s orthodontics department. I waited a few months for the appointment, however when I went – I was told they only did children’s orthodontics!... So that wasted a few months! (it would have perhaps been helpful if they had told me that before accepting the referral!

To be honest, it is a bit frustrating having braces, both upper & lower, especially as my teeth are already almost straight! The lowers are the worst as they are pretty much perfect as they are. Nevermind. I think if I had always had dodgy teeth, I would have at least expected ortho treatment somewhere along the way. But at age 26, it was a bit of a bolt out of the blue. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it will all be worth it in the end. :)

To cut a long story short – My treatment is being carried out at Guy’s NHS Dental Hospital in London by a post-grad ortho, under the supervision of professors. I am also very lucky that I am not having to pay for my treatment.

I was told that there were basically 3 scenarios to my treatment. Exposed canines/orthodontic treatment for 2 years, or surgical removal of the canines and implants/bridges as replacements, or removal of canines and move round adjacent teeth orthodontically to close the gaps. To qualify for NHS treatment, I was required to have braces first. If that doesn’t work, they will then fund the implants, if needed.

My original assessment was in December 2004 and I was told that I was to be put on a surgery waiting list to have my canines exposed, and to have my wisdom teeth removed at the same time. Also, Xmas ‘04 I had a bad wisdom flare and it got infected, so I needed that removed as an emergency at a local hospital.

By August 2005, I still hadn’t heard from Guy’s about my surgery date, and I was a bit peed off to be told that they had “forgottenâ€

Congrats Lucyloop for finally posting your story and pictures!

Sounds a little disappointing that you had to have full braces just for two impacted canines. I almost know the feeling except my teeth were way horrible to begin with! Now you'll have an absolutely gorgeous smile! But those supposedly are the most importatnt teeth and I didn't even know they were up in my palate!!

How long was your estimated time in braces? Mine is 3-4 years but I know we're going to be closer to 4! :? My ortho said we can really start moving on my treatment (after 22 months) once my other impacted tooth comes down! It finally gets a bracket next week!

You do have a lovely house! Sorry to hear you've had so much pain in your life so far! Good luck on your Botox surgery!
Good luck with your next adjustment!
Keep us posted! :computer:

Thank you all for your really kind comments! It took me forever to do, but now I'm worried it's really too long, rambling & boring!!

It covers pretty much everything though. I'll let you all know how I get on at my 3rd adjustment on Tuesday!!

Not boring at all.

I actually read the whole thing without skipping anything! (For me, this is hard to do.)

The canine exposure pics will really make me think twice when I have a complaint about my braces! I know that is not fun as an old girlfriend of mine from 15 years ago went through the same thing. I remember her telling me that she had to drive from the dentist's office after having the exposure straight to the Orthodontist's office to have the brackets placed on the teeth that were in the roof of her mouth. Ouch. Not fun, I am sure!!!!

Hi Lucyloop

Thanks for posting your story. I too read the whole thing. I hope all goes well for you, you deserve it. I will also be having the impacted canine surgery. When I go in for my next appointment at the end of February my Ortho will decide if the time is right. I'm a little scared though. Sometimes I think of how much easier it would be with braces if only I didn't have those impacted canines.

It sounds like your remodel ideas are really unique. A glass roof kitchen sound really cool.

Thanks everyone for all the replies... Thankyou for reading about lil old me! :D

Well, latest update - Yesterday was my 3rd Adjustment.....

I'm a bit peed off actually!! I had been expecting to be told the date for my wisdom teeth surgery. However, I've now been told that they won't be able to remove them until AFTER the braces come off! :(

My ortho told me that the professor now says that they don't like to operate on them with the braces, as it can bugger up the treatment/progress. (Will this not happen afterwards though too?!) :?

Anyway, he did say that if I get a bad flare or infection again, then they will take them out.... but I'm annoyed as they shouldn't even be in my mouth to start with! (They were supposed to come out in one surgery, along with my canine exposure). So basically, because some dipstick forgot to put me on the waiting list.. I've got to put up with my wisdoms hurting for the next 2 years at least! :(

Re: The actual adjustment.... well, nothing very eventful really:

Removal of powerthread from 4 front teeth - Replaced with figure-of-eight ligs.

New ligs on all, apart from no ligs at all on top left teeth for some reason.

New wire tie on one bottom tooth again.

New stronger elastic threads to pull on my pesky canines.

Overall, he's pleased with the progress of Pesky 1, but Pesky 2 still hasn't budged, so hopefully things will start moving soon!

Another thing which is worrying me a bit..... At the start of my treatment, he told me it would be 2 years treatment time. Now, he says 2 and a half years! What's the betting that when I go next time that will have crept up to 3 years?! I hope not! LOL! :?

I suppose one positive thing about me not having the wisdom surgery this year is that I won't need to be worrying about all that when I have the Botox surgery on my waterworks! It means I can just focus on that this year now I suppose! :?

He told me that I'll have to go back and see him though, before I go in for my Botox surgery... as he needs to wire all my brackets together, so they don't get knocked off during the surgery. Hopefully that won't slow things up though.

Well, that's about all the news for my teeth really. I'll try and post another piccie soon, although things don't really look too different to my last picture really.

As for the house, well - Hurrah... We picked up the new basin and shower for the bathroom.... now we just need the loo and someone to fit the damn things!! :) It's a step in the right direction though! Also, ordered our new washing machine yesterday, so no more handwashing in the bath, or imposing on my Mum! I got a grand total of about 4 hours sleep in the past 5 days, so I think I deserve a rest now! LOL! :-Z

Take care & Thanks for reading!

LUCY xxx

Lucy ... what a major pain in the rare with regard to your wisdoms. Hopefully a more satisfactory outcome will be reached in the near future!

Your adjustment sounds like an interesting one with loads of changes ... even if not all of them sounding logic! I love the fact you no longer have ligs on your top left teeth ... there's gotta be a good reason, but it would have been good for you to have been told it!

Great that P1 is performing and hopefully P2 will move into gear soon and show P1 what this game is all about!

Great that you've picked up that lovely new basin and shower ... now gotta get moving on the loo and getting them all working! Hopefully before your next adjustment you'll have some good news to report in that area! :jump:

Hope you've caught up on some much needed :-Z and your mouth is feeling good!

Take care!
