Guppie51's smile (photos)

#1 Post by Guppie51 »

:D I am Gup, im 21 years old (male), and have always wanted braces. I used to be made fun of because of my "bucked teeth" which stick out and my gaps, but actually learned to love my smile and actually never tried to hide it. My parents could never afford braces, and to tell you the truth, I never really took care of my teeth until now. I decided a beautiful smile would definitely help with the profession I am in, and would make me MUCH more confident.

I decided to get braces, got the money together but didnt expect to pay over $2000.00 just for the dental work pre-braces! (no insurance) I had many old fillings replaced, new cavities filled, and a root canal with crown done all in a month (I wanted braces on ASAP). I also had cleaning etc done and I was ready!

I went to my orthodontist and he decided I needed braces on the top and bottom and my treatment time would be at least two years. This was fine. I did all the paperwork, paid my deposit ($1500.00) and took the pics, molds, and X-rays. I had the spacers put on 09-14-05 and let me say...the spaces in my teeth are primarily in the front and the spacers HURT as my teeth are tighter back there...but I learned to deal with it. I get my braces on TOMORROW! and Im soo excited, I have read about sores, bleeding gums, torn up tongue, but the way I see it, IT WILL BE WELL WORTH IT!

Here is a pic of my smile now
Image
Here these show I have LOTS of space in between my teeth (teeth will be moved inward, and closer together) and one front tooth is longer than the other (will be shaved down later).

I will update tomorrow (09-20-05) when I get the braces on, and at least monthly thereafter. Any comments and personal experiences are welcome.

P.S. geeze, next time Ill be sure to shave...pics look scruffy!

Thanks guys!

caryca,
I got braced three hours ago and so far nothing bad is happening...my Ortho said to take pain pills as soon as possible because I would soon feel the tension, but I had to ZOOM back to school and I dont get out until 8pm...Ill post pics then. Wow, getting braced was soo much easier than dealing with the painful spacers...woo! 2 years to go.

KK,
Thanks for the advice! REALLY! I applied chapstick liberally and had no probs with the streched out mouth thing (once my lip split at the regular dentist!). So far so good with the rubbing...I havent talked to ANYBODY... one of my professors asked me something, but I kinda nodded. Ill be more brave in the future as for now, gotta shut up and im not eating any meals unless im at home or at work (work 11 hr days so must eat).

Ill post pics in about four hours when I get home...they dont look as big as they feel...they are fine! I feel like I belong with you guys now...you all having braces and all.

How exciting for you! Did you find yourself playing with the brackets all day? That's what I did my first day. HA! Welcome to the world of having braces! :D

Well I just finished brusing my teeh/braces for the first time. Wow, I hope I dont starve having these on, today I only ate two meals. AND I DONT NEED TO LOOSE WEIGHT.
Tonight I tried to eat spaghetti and meat balls, but so much stuff was getting into my braces and my newly crowned molar makes it painful to chew so... I swised the chunks out with water and threw the spaghetti in the blender  it made a puree-is stuff that tasted like patte. I was so hungry I didnt care what it looked like. So Im a punk, I couldnt take actually chewing (I cant bite, my front teeth are sore) so Im eating liquid food. I already blended something to take to work tomorrow and will prob get some soup while in there :)

Anyway, here they are, my braces. I got the gray color just cause even though my orthdontist made a joke and said I should get "buterfly colors" (since I work with B-flies) but I dont want a rainbow in my mouth just yet.

Call me crazy but I like the way my smile looks with the braces...the middle (biggest) gap is not as prevalent. And they are working...there is constant tension on those teeth to come together...this is exciting, ive waited forever to do this 8)

HollyDontSpend,
I had to rush back to school and just kinda kept my mouth shut (until a classmate asked to see em) but I was too scared to touch them!!! they feel soo big, but at home, yes I did a full insepction, and Im happy to say Theres nothing inside to cut my tongue (ive read horror stories) but the little wire end on the right is kinda long and caught my cheek when I was doing some odd position taking pics. Everythings cool, I dont need the painkillers the Doc told me to take, and havent used any wax YET.

Welcome to the club! Soft food's the thing for the first several days, especially since you've also got a new crown. Smoothies with protein, scrambled eggs, soup, stuff like that, all great.

Thanks for the photos. I bet you see amazing changes really quickly! Good luck!

glad to hear you are doing fine

spagetti for me is still.....a problem
I have changed the stuff that I eat, and even now, after nearly 15 weeks with braces, I am unable to bit with my fronts...so things are different for all of us

Your braces look great!! HA! Thought that was funny what you said about when you got back to school! That's great that you haven't had to use wax yet. I have found that using it on my molars is pretty easy since it doesn't usually come off it's place. Have you seen that ligature color palatte floating around here? There's so many colors to choos from! Maybe check that out for next time to avoid the "butterfly effect." hehe! Either way, congratulations on your braces!
