Hey guys,

I am six weeks post op now and will be seeing my surgeon later this week. (Praying she says I can start trying to chew soft foods!!!)

Anyway its been a difficult month and a half - as all of you that have been through it will know. Throw in lots of other difficult stuff going on in the rest of my bubble I am hoping to have a trip away as a post op reward! Looking at going to Rome (from UK). I will be around 10 weeks post op when I will fly (If I book it). How long have people waited to fly? does swelling come back temporary or should I be fine after that long??

Also what were people able to eat at 10 weeks?? I am a MASSIVE foody and have never been to Rome but always wanted to go. With Italian food being one of my faves I don't want to miss out on anything. I know most of it will be soft (pizzas, pasta, ice cream.) but I don't want to be limited on the trip!

Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

Hey there - me again - I was just searching exactly the same question as you! We had a trip to Paris booked for 1 May, thinking my surgery was going to be end of Jan, but then surgery got moved to end Feb so I'll only be nine weeks post-op when we go. I already mentioned it to my surgeon and he said it'd be fine, but I just realised I never told him we're flying there - I'm a bit worried about changes in air pressure and whether the surgery affected my sinuses. I'm going to double check with him tomorrow so I'll let you know. Also, turns out my travel insurance won't cover me until 8 weeks after the hospital discharged me, which was 4 March, so I have to phone the day before we go to find out just how much extra they are going to add to my premium...

hey you!! how are you doing? so would it be 8 weeks post op for you for Paris?

I hadn't even thought about travel insurance...argh! What is classed as discharge? As in when you actually came home from hospital? My care has apparently been handed over from my surgeon to my ortho now? I just had a quick look at one sight (post office insurance) and they say you're not covered for:

Anyone who is waiting for an operation, post operative check-up, any other hospital treatment
or any medical investigations, tests or test results

Anyone who is waiting for a consultation with a hospital doctor (other than your GP) for any medical
condition or set of symptoms, other than for regular check-ups for a stable condition

doesn't sound too good? Not sure what to do now........ hmmmm

We arranged our trip through airmiles, or Avios as they are now, but their insurance is provided by Rock. The phone number I have is 01732 853081. I don't have all the small print to hand, but it has the usual disclaimers about pre-existing conditions. It doesn't mean they won't cover you, it just means you have to go through everything on the phone and pay an extra premium. However, because they won't cover anyone who's been in hospital within the last eight weeks, they will refuse me cover if I apply before 30 April, and we travel on 1 May. The timing's more than a little tight for my liking, but at least I know I can get cover. I might ask the surgeon tomorrow if he'd be willing to write a 'fit to travel' letter.

ahhh right okay I get it! So I just need to find an insurer nearer the time probably. Just had a little look on a few and done a few of the medical screening tests but it is saying orthognathic abnormalities aren't classed as a pre existing condition? very confusing! I am seeing my surgeon this week so i will ask them if they could give me a fit to travel letter too!

Just saw surgeon and ortho this morning and they said flying should be no problem whatsoever. I asked about the swelling by my nose and whether there were potentially any issues with my sinuses and air pressure and the surgeon said that as long as I didn't get a sinus infection then any air forced into the sinuses would find its way back out again. He was so laid back about it I felt too embarrassed to ask for it in writing - perhaps that was a bit daft of me... I'm a natural worrier so I may call the insurance company again just to make sure there won't be a problem. They aren't listing it as a 'jaw abnormality' but as a 'jaw realignment' - I think it's the fact that you've had a surgery rather that's more important to them than the fact that it was on the jaw. It's so nice to have something exciting to look forward to - though I got so much good news this morning I'm getting a bit giddy - I'll post separately in the March thread rather than jumble all this up. Enjoy your travels!

I also saw my surgeon today and they pretty much said the same thing. Have you heard back from the insurance people??

My current travel insurers aren't interested in even discussing cover until 30 April. I checked a few alternatives on confused.com and there were a couple of options, about £30 each, so not as horrific as I anticipated. I'll ring my current insurer again on 30 April, but it's nice to know that if they refuse cover there are some alternatives available. I just hate leaving things like that til the last minute!
