salty teeth

#1 Post by suetemi »

This is going to sound strange, but some of my teeth taste very salty and I was wondering if I'm going crazy or if this is something that someone else might have experienced or heard about. Strangely, it's only certain teeth. When I touch one of my back lower molars with my tongue or press it against one of the upper incisor, it literally tastes like I'm pressing my tongue against a chunk of rock salt. It's possible that it might be related to a sinus problem I had earlier, which started around a month after getting braces, but then again maybe not. When I asked my ortho about this, he looked at me like I was off my rocker. I'm hoping it's not a sign of something serious and that I can just ignore it , but it's just a very strange conundrum so I had to ask.

Maybe theres a bit of inflammation around the gumline on those teeth, causes it to maybe bleed a little bit and give you the salty taste?

A good theory, but I had a check-up by a dentist recently who said my gums were in top shape, better than many others he sees in braces.

I have a salty taste too, especially right after I rinse with mouthwash and brush. I just associated it to the taste of the metal, but it is definately a salty taste.

I don't think it is anything serious, and I have been getting good check-ups from the ortho and dentist.

Maybe your toothpaste or mouthwash is reacting with the metal of your braces? I know anything with hydrogen peroxide reacts with the metal in my expander and causes a weird salty/twangy sort of taste.
Lower braces: 7/1/08
Expander installed: 7/8/08
SARPE: 7/15/08
First adjustment for lowers: 8/5/08
Expander tied: 8/11/08
Upper braces: 8/28/08
Lefort I & BSSO: 1/8/13

If I eat boiled eggs, I get an awful metallic taste off my wires. It must be the sulphur in the eggs, I think (the stuff that makes boiled eggs smell like farts)

I also get a salty taste sometimes and I don't know why. Just once in a while it feels like everything I eat or drink is pickled in brine. Water removes the salt taste but it soon comes back, and then after a few days, it goes away again.

I've tasted salt from my teeth before too. It didn't last for very long (a few days), and it doesn't happen very often. It seems to strike my crowns. I haven't experienced it with my intact teeth. I have no idea what it is. It doesn't correlate with any particular foods, dental care products, or dental procedures.

I noticed the same thing when I started using a new brand of toothpaste... I also notice it when I drink certain alcoholic beverages.... the most noticeable one is Petrone Tequila...

No matter how much I brushed my teeth I still had that taste in my mouth for a few days... needless to say... I don't drink it anymore...

I get a salty taste in my mouth sometimes too, but I have bad acid reflux. I usually attribute it to that... and or irritation causing some bleeding now and then. I know my lips bleed a lot!

Hi. I know it's a long time since this topic was posted. Do you found a solution or the origin of this problem? My husband has the same salty (sonetimws bitter or like vinegar) taste on his incisor for about a year. But no denstists or other docs have an idea. It's very hard to endure it.

Thanks, Ninni
