Adjustment #16 yesterday. Replaced upper wire - same gauge but with a closing loop. Finally we'll take care of the extraction gap. About time - extraction was back in spring 2016. :) My orthodontist worked carefully on the position and shape of the loop. He also told me that TMA wires work better on ceramic brackets in his experience. (I have some ceramic brackets for upper.)

Tightening on lower. Same wire.

Took an Advil at dinner time yestereday and did not eat much -- adjustment was mid morning and I was pretty sore by evening. Flossing this morning was painful. But towards dinner time today - about 30 hours after the visit - things seemed to have returned to normal. The new normal anyway.

Another new part of the journey - adjustment #18 brings on the rubber bands. Each rubber band goes on 4 teeth: canine/1st premolar on the top, and the two premolars on the bottom. The premolars aren't really touching at this point, so hopefully this will fix the bite. Really big pressure initially, but I do feel that the bands start to lose strength after a few hours. I am instructed to change them once a day. Learning to put them on took a while, but the plastic tool does help. It's amazing how fast one gets used to the "new normal." I even forgot to take them off before breakfast this morning - of course I realized very quickly and off them came.

The rubber bands I am given are 3/16" (4.8mm), "heavy", with a big Galapagos Giant Tortoise on the packaging.

Having rubber bands does not really affect speech that much, to my surprise. It does put a stop to my snacking during the day. Another thing I've learned (again) is to floss religiously. If not, my gums will let me know very quickly.

Adjustment #19 (2018-02-12)

#66 Post by gobraces »

This post is a bit behind. My adjustment #19 came and went with not much excitement. Business as usual.

What's been different is that I had a wisdom tooth extracted five days ago. This was one on the lower left and my ortho had recommended that it be taken out from the very beginning. Since it didn't really bother me, we decided to let it be. It was never part of the brace work so it was just kind of hanging back there. Most of it is erupted, so only a small portion was hidden under the gum. It was this small portion that gave me trouble since adjustment #18. I don't know if it was the rubber bands, but this wisdom tooth was being pushed and dug a bit deeper in. The gum was irritated and had frequent bleeding. And it hurt. So I sought advice from both my dentist and my ortho. They agreed that it had to go.

Other than the fact that it was bothering me, my ortho also pointed out, again, that after all my ortho work, this wisdom tooth will have no opposing tooth above it, so it would potentially grow taller and do some damage.

OK. So I scheduled an appointment with an oral surgeon, and the tooth came out with minimal work. Local anesthesia (laughing gas and three pricks), less than a minute and it was gone. I was on pain med for a couple of days. Have not missed it a bit.

I wonder what this would do to the lower arch. Curious. I also think that the extraction gap is all gone now, but my ortho still activated that loop some more. (It was put in last October.) I'm guessing that we won't be needing it next month. We'll see.

Adjustment #20 (2018-03-19)

#67 Post by gobraces »

Adjustment #20 was pretty routine. No wire change. Rubber bands will stay in the current formation. Extraction gap is almost all closed up (loop put in back in October last year).

Since I am hitting the two-year mark this time, I asked how much more time I will stay in braces. "Definitely off some time in 2018," my ortho said with confidence. Good with me. I also learned that I'll pretty much be doing rubber band from this point onward until de-bracing day. They have worked really well on closing the gap between the canine's and premolars - still a bit more distance to go, but my bite is truly getting so much better. Mid line is also aligned quite well now. Daily change is getting very subtle nowadays, but the small changes do add up to quite an amazing transformation. Never expected my bite to be so different (and better).

Next adjustment in five weeks: may change lower wire. I Sounds like some more rubber banding will come, as we are trying to move a wisdom tooth on lower right forward to close a gap. Doc said it's too far back to use a closing loop in the wire, so we'll just do rubber bands. I am getting very good at using the little plastic tool to put them on.

Learning: important to floss around the closing loop area, as it is very close to the gum and may have food trapped even after lots of swishing and water pikking...

Adjustment #21 UNEXPECTED

#70 Post by gobraces »

Thank you for visiting, lovely and tilly upstairs!

Well, I had an "emergency" visit this past Monday. The closing loop in the upper wire has done such a fantastic job that the extraction gap is all but gone, which now makes the closing loop itself cutting into the gum. I felt a sting while using waterpik last week in that area, and flossing yielded traces of pink. As I have a trip out of town coming up, this was a big no-no.

Turns out my ortho was pleased to see the progress he decided it was time to lose the wire with the closing loop. Back to 17x25 Copper Ni-Ti for some more tweaking.

So, rubber band stays. So does my existing appointment which is in two weeks. I am attaching a quick shot of what the teeth look like today (versus two years ago when braces first came on). Sorry about the low quality.

Regular appointment. Power chain all the way across on lower, with a new wire (same gauge though, 0.016x0.025). A 3-unit chain to close a gap on lower right - to pull wisdom tooth forward to close a gap.

Rubber bands continue - no change.

My Ortho keeps asking me to wear my rubberbands on my upper 4 to my lower 6th and I cant stick with it.. Do you find yours super uncomfortable for your jaw/Cheeks? its not lke the rest of braces pain where it eases up after a couple weeks... how did you get through it?
