retainers

I thought the retainer I would need would be included in the cost of ortho...but I just found out I get the essix? traditional retainer, but I need a metal retainer on bottom and a mouth guard retainer? on top...$400 each, total $800. I would like to know if I can get them direct from lab. Any experiences?
