Most obnoxious retainer ever seen.. aka Orthodontist Revenge

I swear this is my orthodontist getting revenge for me being an annoying patient. Okay, first of all I asked for help with the retainer to help keep my posterior open bite from reoccurring like it did 15 years ago, so I am to blame a bit.

Officially its only mandatory at night, but also during the day if I can. Talking, well, I sound like Daffy Duck. Eating with it? Not possible. I do have a clear Essix retainer to where when not wearing this one,

This could be fun.. I should go through a drive thru and see if they understand me.

I have never seen anything quite like that. Did your ortho explain how that design might prevent a relapse of your open bite? Kudos to you if you manage it any time other than sleeping!

Its to keep my tongue from resting on my teeth as much as possible,. I thought they were just going to do a small metal loops around the premolars. But nope, they went whole hog.

Yikes! Just seeing all that acrylic nearly triggered a gag reflex...lol. Hope you adjust to it quickly.

Lots of saliva, but no gag. Actually like it better than the Essix, with the exception of not being able to talk. Every speech rule that I was ever taught in speech class when I was in a kid is being broken right now.

I also prefer my hawley to my essix, but I don't think I would prefer yours! But I suppose we eventually get used to whatever appliances we are given. I don't suppose your retainer is any worse than twin blocks.

Already decided to try to wear it full time over the Essix. Just the speech will come. It just a little daunting expecting to be done with major things in your mouth, and then walk into the office and see that behemoth. Not what i was expecting.

It's like on one of the scale is the minimum retainer wear, (Clear during the day and Hawley beast at night), and at the other end its the Hawley beast 24/7. I figured I may as well try to do the Hawley as much as I can and learn to talk with it.

Ir's comfortable. Just annoying as heck. Kinda tough realizing this is my future for the next year at least, and in reality at night forever.

Wow! I am back in braces again due to my posterior open bite coming back less than a year after my braces were removed. Interested to learn more about this retainer. Did your ortho recommend a positioner at all? I have read about positioners also helping prevent relapse of a posterior open bite but my ortho doesn't seem to think a positioner is a great thing.

No. Well see. I did normal retention 12ish yrs ago n bite reopenned. So trying this retainer. I was a bit in shock when I saw this retainer. I was told we were going to do a slightly different retainer but nothing this extreme. I'll let u know if it works. Feel free to contact me on private message and can share more info. I'd love to convince myself to wear it 24/7 but just can't talk this bad around my wife and kids. It's slowly getting better. So maybe one of these I may 'misplace' my essix n just do this one.
