May Braces Poll

How does having braces affect your social life and your relationships?
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

Not so far - I've been with my boyfriend 2.5 years and only had the braces on since this February.

It hasn't affected our relationship in any way.

Overall, when out and about - I've not had any comments or stares or anything nasty like that.

This may sound funny, but my wife says I look better with braces.

I'm married, so not an issue. I have to say with lingual uppers and lower ceramics it's not too noticible. I would recommend this combination to anyone who feels self concious. Having said that before I had the work done, I can't say my teeth were very nice and my husband dated me with yucky teeth so can't see braces would have put him off any more than my crocked teeth, so no, I don't think it would have been an issue.

Braces Poll & Dating

#9 Post by Becca »

I've been with my boyfriend for almost 5 years, now. He really supported me in getting braces and doesn't think anything of it. In fact, he kind of likes to check up on my progress every now and then because he had to wear braces for a long time when he was younger. :D But even singles that I've talked to have had no problem getting dates! If someone is THAT concerned about your appearance than you shouldn't worry about them anyway..Besides, maybe you'll run into them again one day and you can flash your GORGEOUS STRAIGHT smile at them!! LOL!

I'm married, so dating isn't an issue. Hubby is less than supportive of my metallic smile, but that's okay...

Been with my husband for 10 years, so dating isn't an issue. He doesn't mind my metal mouth. My workmates and friends seem to think I'm nuts for doing it, but they're used to it now.

I am not dating right now, but it does impact me socially. I feel self-consicous with them... especially when I am around people and food. I don't like to eat in front of others because things get stuck and I always have to sneak away to brush.

I also don't really care for how young it makes me look.

obviously if you are married/in a long term relationship your partner will say you look good, they cant exactly turn around & call you ugly... more to my point. why on earth would braces make dating easier?

its either more difficult or the same, braces arn't exactly a selling point in the dating game. having invisalign nothing has changed for me as nobody notices them. If you are married or in a long term relationship dont bother commenting... this poll hardly applies to you!!

the poll isnt "does your partner like your braces..." its "how does having braces affect your ability to get dates?"

Loving the invisalign, a great choice for correcting my teeth.

Settle down, that's probably why the poll results are weighed so heavily on the "i'm not dating right now." Many of us are in committed relationships and are just here to share our own experiences! And regardless of what they may say to our faces, everyone is worried that their partner might find them unattractive. I for one am thankful for the encouragement I got from my bf, I might have backed out if he hadn't assured me that he wouldn't mind my having braces.
Also, being married or committed to someone doesn't mean we no longer have a social life! We still interact and meet people in social situations!

sorry after reading you post i realised how mine came across.
i didnt mean to come across so harsh.

i appreciate that we are all here to improve ourselves & kudos to those who are currently in treatmeant, have finished or are seriously considering it. support from family/friends is important, but in the end the decision should be yours & yours alone.
