Anyone have jaw surgery with out having braces first?

Hi. I have a crooked jaw and have been wanting surgery for 20 years. Based on research, I figured I would probably have to get braces first. So, I made an appointment with an Orthodontist and a surgeon. The surgeon said that based on my bite that she could do the surgery with out me getting braces first but the orthodontist said he wouldn't recommend it. I've been reading blogs about people's jaw surgery experiences and so far haven't read any where someone didn't have braces first. I went ahead and scheduled surgery because this might be my only chance, but I'm worried if I'm making the right decision. So, if there is anyone who didn't have braces first, I'd love to hear your experience. Thank you!
