Blood loss / transfusion during surgery

#1 Post by braceface2017 »

About 6.5 weeks ago I had the following procedures:
-ORIF Maxilla Laforte
-ORIF Mandible Bilateral
-Septoplasty
-Genioplasty

During my procedure, something went "wrong" and I ended up loosing 1500mL of blood due to the maxillary artery. I had to get a blood transfusion and got about 4 units of blood. From what I read, this seems like a blood transfusion was very low risk.... not sure if that made my recovery any harder.

I did spend 2 nights in the hospital... 1 just wasn't enough.

anybody else experience this?

I'm sorry you had to experience this. Any artery going to the head is very important. Hoping for a quick recovery.

I guess my surgery was estimated to last 4-5 hours... it ended up taking 9!!!! I could only imagine what my husband was thinking in the waiting room.

Slightly harder as your body has to put up a *small* fight against someone else's blood, but in the big scheme of things probably didn't put you behind too far.

Things happen during surgery; that's why you sign the consent form. It is still just a practice of medicine and not a science.

Good luck with your recovery!!
Round 3 (lifetime) Damon stainless applied 3/16/20 (after 4 weeks attempting invisalign) On for about 18 months
Night time elastics with invisalign retainers; still...
Double jaw surgery was 6/18/15...
Orthodontics never really ends...
I'm emphatically against extraction orthodontics!
