What have you eaten that has caused a bracket to come off?

#1 Post by Shawnie »

Since it's been almost four months now and I've been slowly eating everything I want, even popcorn YUMMY! Haven't had a bracket come off yet, but was just wondering what you ate that caused the bracket to come off.

Hey Shawnie,

You and I had them put on on the same day. Ceramic uppers and metal lowers.

I just broke a bracket on dried figs -- my favorite snack. I thought some moist fresh ones wouldn't hurt, but I was wrong.

I've had braces for over 10 months and have eaten everything I've wanted to...even popcorn. I have yet to break anything, but you know, I could just be lucky.

Hi Nicholas

Thanks for the quick reply. Glad I don't like dried figs. I think if I get to ocean the popcorn is gonna get me.

Hey, same day braced. I can't say that I don't even feel these braces like some other people. Wish I could, how about you, are you used to them yet?

Hey, Nicholas, dried figs are also one of MY favorite things. Healthy and lots of fiber, sweet but not sugary.

I haven't broken anything yet, but I did just stain my ligs with some VERY red enchilada sauce. But I think it was worth it!

Shawnie,
I eat everything, tootsie rolls, ( cautiously of course) popcorn, chewy bagels, you name it and I havent had any trouble with those, but I broke a bracket eating a bowl of cereal ( Honey Bunches of Oats! LOL) Crazy!

Is it true that eating the "naughty" stuff will slow the process down or is that just something they say to scare you? I guess I could see that some things (e.g, especially hard or chewy foods) might loosen some stuff. I wonder if there have been any studies done on that.

The only thing that has broken a bracket was biting a dill pickle spear. I haven't been brave enough to try popcorn or anything chewy. I have carefully eaten pecans and apples, but I'm always nervous when I'm doing it.

I broke a bracket on a fresh french baguette....this was before I knew that crunchy stuff was 'forbidden'. I didn't get that talk from the ortho's office when I got my braces and missed it on here.

I eat nuts and anything else now without any trouble so long as I'm careful. Ohh, haven't tried popcorn yet - not sure I like the thought of all those little bits (rather than concerns about brackets coming off).

Haha i broke several brackets but only 1 with eating. The very day when i got my braces i ate a big piece of chocolate and i snapped one bracket. No biggie, just watch out with brushing your teeth, brackets tend to pop off with a constant external pressure on them. I guess they dont like to be cleaned

btw i had ceramic brackets on my upper arch
Uppers: Permanent retainer + hawley (night)
Lowers: Permanent retainer

Debanded since the 16th of Jan.

Oh, well, great...I work for an Italian food magazine and have to travel and eat the stuff all the time! On the plus, I've lost 6 lbs. in a week!

Thanks everyone for the replies. Maybe I'll be a little more careful, not too much though.
