Correcting a tongue thrust: tongue reminders or speech therapy?

#1 Post by sallym76 »

Which is more successful in correcting a tongue thrust, the pronged/prickly tongue reminders or speech therapy? One orthodontist recommended a retainer to pull the top teeth in (4-6mm overjet) and tongue reminders on the upper teeth to correct the tongue thrust. The other orthodontist I consulted with recommended braces to pull the top teeth in and speech therapy later if the tongue thrust is still present after the lip-trap is closed. I've been researching online and found very conflicting info - some say tongue reminders can cause other problems, some say speech therapy may be ineffective in re-training the tongue.
