Who else has risked popcorn? :)

#1 Post by Lisa65 »

I've been in braces for just over 2 years now and I've eaten most of the "forbidden foods" including corn on the cob. I never dared have popcorn though, but last night we went to see Prince Caspian at our local cinema and I thought "oh what the heck, I'm gonna have some".
Good job the cinema was dark, as I must have looked a bit odd testing each kernel with my front teeth to make sure there were no hard bits before chewing it, but I ate my way through quite a large tub (hubby doesn't like it) during the course of the film, with no mishaps. My waterpik took care of any "leftovers" when I got home.

The movie was good too, not as good as the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but still a good 2 hours of entertainment and fairly true to the original book.

Corn and the cob I cannot do! I tried again last night and it just was hard and I was afraid of breaking something. But popcorn I've had.

The only things I've stayed away from are Granola and Gum.

Lisa, Lisa, Lisa:
You challenger of the forbidden foods. Pop corn isn't hard except for the seeds. The secret is to eat small amounts (no stuffing your mouth like a squirrel) and let the pop corn dissolve in your mouth. Just as good just a bit different chewing method. Cleaning can be a challenge.

Corn on the cob, that won't happen until I'm brace free (darnit).

Since having braces, I'm yet to find eating popcorn difficult, or rather any more difficult than eating other food in braces.

I risked popcorn one time. I was at the movies on a date, and the girl ordered up some popcorn. I totally forgot that I totally don't like eating popcorn and just started digging in during the movie!

Nothing happened though, except that I spent nearly 20 minutes in the theatre bathroom cleaning my teeth after the movie was out, in case she wanted a kiss goodnight.

You just have to watch out for the seeds that tend to be towards the bottom.

On a side note: I've also done corn on the cob, although to me, it's not worth all the cleaning that I have to do afterwards. I've also done ribs (very difficult!), steak, and sucked on ice (but did not chew!) for a sore tongue.

I've had everything on the list. Including some stupid soy nuts which ended up in 1 broken bracket. I enjoy popcorn religiously (air popped with garlic salt) and love hard toffee. I don't think I ever stayed away from caramels and marshmallows (scotchmallows from See's Candies are addictive). Corn on the cob one of my all time fav's for some reason the clean up is easy for me. I love tortilla chips, hard shelled tacos, taquitos, and flautas. At my old job, I ate cashews almost every morning for about a year while braced. Hm... Maybe I should cut back on my junk foods...

I did popcorn many times while braced. The only challenge I found was the clean up. Popcorn finds its way into every nook and cranny anyway and with braces there are infinitely more nooks and crannys for it to hide in. Otherwise, it was no problem at all.

The only things I really avoided while braced were corn on the cob and really gooey things like carmels that would be nightmarish to try and clean off my braces.

I LOVE Popcorn, and probably even more so now because it's a "forbidden" food.

I have been in braces for about 10 months and along with many other people I think the only food I have not gone for is corn on the cob. It's just too difficult to figure out how to it eat it without looking completely awkward.

At first I was a little nervous that I might break something, but once I realized how strong my brackets were, I was very happy!

I've never been a huge fan of popcorn so I don't have a hard time staying away from it. However I did like to get some when my husband and i would go to the movies. I've always had a hard time with it getting stuck in my teeth before braces so I haven't even dared to try it with them. I do kind of miss it at the movies though.

One thing that I don't mind eating that's on the no no list is nuts. I just love almonds especially when they are in a Hershey bar. ooohhhhh.

Will try popcorn now!

I thought that I would have to stay away from popcorn but after reading your comments, will give it a try. Have only been in braces for one week! I did have a ligature pop off last night while try to eat a piece of real coconut from the shell!!!

I ate popcorn today for the first time since Brace Day 14 months ago. Then I saw this thread. Can't decide whether to take it as a friendly warning from the Tooth Fairy or not.

Haven't eaten THIS forbidden food yet, but I have had some gummy snacks and had hard candy a few times --- little scared to try the popcorn because I don't want to pick it all out! Yuck :?

Thanks for everyone else's willingness to risk it, last night I dug into some "moose munch" from Harry & David that my aunt sent in a care package. I sort of sucked on it until it softened then chewed as well as I could (molar build ups). Yum!
Def. worth the risk. :)

I eat popcorn every few months haven't had any problems yet. Two brackets have popped off because of food: pizza crust (my fault) and a hamburger (I blamed it on the hotel that served it since it was a block of concrete).
