Palate Expander keeps falling out

My son is almost 6, but has his 7-year molars. He has a crossbite and has had a palate expander in since May. However, it has fallen out 3 times already! The first time, they reapplied the glue and reinstalled it. The second time, they had an entirely new one made, but now that one has become loose. Is this normal? He's supposed to keep it in for 8 months, but it can't seem to stay in well for more than 2 weeks at a time
