I can't believe your orthodontist said that. Are all his patients so concerned with looks? Is he? If all his adult patients have them, why would that be a reason to get them? Could they see it coming in the X-ray as the canine was coming down? Was there nothing they could do to stop it?

Usually phase I is necessary if there is trouble with the sequence of new teeth coming in. For example my daughter's incisor came in back by the 6-year molar.
