11 year old son loses permanent lateral incisor
My youngest son, who has been in braces since June 2013 had been complaining about a tooth chipping. I couldn't see anything, and said wait until your orthodontist appointment in a few days, and let him look at it. His right top lateral incisor was dead and broken in 3 pieces. The canine transected ...

Re: Do you avoid certain foods?
Ive eaten popcorn and almonds. The almonds werent worth it but the popcorn wasnt a problem. Looking for the "Like" button on your post. I am a popcorn addict. I use white popcorn, it has many fewer hulls than yellow popcorn. I also don't eat the half-popped kernels anymore, and ...

Re: Wires Changed - Ouch!
I got my first set of SureSmile wires on Dec. 9th. They pretty much hurt for 5 straight weeks, albeit in different places. Got my 2nd set of SureSmile wires on Jan. 13th. They are a stiffer wire, and probably won't get changed for several months, and I hurt in places it didn't previously hurt. My bi...

Re: Adjustments for elastics?
I have just started with elastics on Dec. 9th. Have the "Manatees" in a box configuration on 4-7 top/bottom on left, and 4-6 top/4-7 bottom on right. I don't have brackets on top right #7 or top left #6 because those have gold crowns, and the ortho elected to not band them. I find my mouth...

Re: This is an instrument of torture
After treatment #2 I had an upper Hawley retainer I wore religiously for 12+ years before starting treatment #3. I would also suggest you take it with you to regular dentist appointments if you are needing any restorative work, crowns, etc. so your dentist can make sure it continues to fit properly.

Re: Waterpik yes or no?
I use a waterpik religiously. It removes chunks of stuff that would otherwise be harder to get out. Means I can eat popcorn, and other things I probably shouldn't as well.

Re: Third time should be the charm?
Got my first set of SureSmile wires on this morning. Doc took 1/10th of a millimeter of enamel off lower teeth to make room to pull them back to clear my upper teeth. Powerchain from 7 to 7 on the lower arch. You might think after a whopping 6+ years of prior treatment(s) I might have had to wear el...

Re: Surgery precautions to take when wearing braces?
I had shoulder surgery 2 weeks ago, and am in full braces. No issues at all with the anesthesia, or being intubated.
Kind of impossible to floss with one hand, thankful for my waterpik and SoniCare toothbrush.

Re: Well, eating sure isn't fun anymore...
My bite only touches in one place right now, and that is the left canine/premolar area. It has moved substantially in the 4 weeks I have had the uppers on, and eating has been a challenge to say the least. Much more of a challenge than I recall from the last time. I don't have a bracket bonded to ei...

Re: Braces Again?
I'm on my 3rd treatment. Once as a teenager, again from Aug 1999 to March 2001, and this time Oct 9th for the lowers, and got the uppers on the 22nd. My teeth look straight, my bite is the problem. So here I am, a week shy of 47 and in braces for the 3rd time. No big deal. Wife has a consult with my...

Re: Oh my gosh, I'm getting braces...
I'm in them for the THIRD time, got the lowers on October 9th, and the tops done on the 22nd. I haven't told many people, obviously my boss, and a few colleagues know because I was out of the office when some stuff we support tanked (not our fault, someone got carried away with SQL Management Studio...

Re: Official 25 and Up Braces Room
I'm a few weeks shy of 47, and just started treatment for the 3rd time. I use a SonicCare, a regular brush, or an Orthodontic manual brush depending on where I am at. I bought a new waterpik, and use Crest Pro Health toothpaste and Flouride rinse. This time is odd, I have no contact points except wh...

Re: Anyone using a sleep apnea CPAP machine with braces?
Lorianne, The SUAD is like a top and bottom Essix retainer that is reinforced acrylic, and has a Herbst-like telescoping rod on each side to advance the lower jaw. It has ball clasps on the top and bottom for elastics (the ones our sleep dentist makes). http://www.strongdental.com/suad_patient.php ....

Re: Anyone using a sleep apnea CPAP machine with braces?
I have been on CPAP for 7+ years. I use the nasal pillows, and can tell you if braces cause a problem after the uppers are done next Tuesday. I tried a nasal mask but it drove me nuts, I don't think I could do a full-face mask. I had issues with my mouth coming open, but that was because the pressur...

Re: Ack, my bracket fell off!
Lorianne, It happens with bonded brackets. Bands are a whole lot harder to break loose. You can do everything right, the assistant/ortho could do everything right, and you could bite into something that generates enough force at the right angle, and it will pop off. Don't worry. Brian
