Re: Flying post op

As well as your surgeon, you would also need to check with your airline as they often won't let you fly for a certain amount of time after surgery. The airline wouldn't let me fly for 14 days. I flew at 4 weeks and it was a little uncomfortable but fine.

Re: Anyone who has had surgery on NHS

Adult orthodontics on the NHS isn't very common. A lot will depend on the area you are in. The hospitals where I had my surgery and all surrounding areas would only consider those people with problems that fitted into grade 5 on the IOTN - http://www.bos.org.uk/orthodonticsandyou/orthodonticsandthen...

Re: Taking out and putting in Essex retainers...help plz

I was told to take them off by pushing up/under/etc.. on the things by my molars and I dreaded taking them out as it was so painful! I had a look online and found a few videos where people were taking them off by pushing up nearer the front teeth. I just searched for something like 'how to take off ...

Re: question for those who had upper and lower jaw surgery

I don't think my jaw popped but I was told not to chew anything for 8 weeks and soft food only until 12 weeks. I couldn't get the hang of chewing for ages anyway! I was never given exercises and 6 months on I can still only open my mouth about 2cm. A few people have told me it took about a year thou...

Re: I just got my braces OFF today but..

I've just had mine off too and got essix retainers. They are worse than the fixed braces as I can't even drink tea/coffee wearing these! Meant to be wearing them 24/7 at the moment apart from eating and the amount of tea I normally drink would mean they would be permanently off so I've had to cut ba...

Re: Surgery hooks

I had mine for over 5 months until I had my braces off. Other people I've spoken to had them off after a couple of weeks so I think it just depends on your ortho.

Re: Finally starting my journey

Thanks both, will try and post some pics this weekend. I'm not doing too well with the retainer. After spending an hour in the chair with my mouth open with them trying to pry the braces off without really being able to open my mouth i've got deep cuts in the corners of my lips. Now it hurts to open...

Re: Finally starting my journey

So yesterday I had my braces taken off :D I now have retainers that I have to wear full-time (except for eating) for the next two weeks and then at night time only with another appointment scheduled in about 3 months. Having them taken off was quite painful. Apparently the glue was stronger than nor...

Re: Surgery is worrying me :( would elastics help overbite/j

I had the same issue (11mm overjet + overbite due to underdeveloped jaw) but I had the surgery 5 months ago (also on the NHS). There are definitely some people that have had some success with elastics. I think they generally leave you with some overjet but it seems that quite a few people have had i...

Re: Need hiring advice; braces; human resources

When I went for a job interview I was worried that they wouldn't hire me because of my braces as they might think I would need lots of time off for appointments.

Hopefully it won't matter either way if you are the best person for the job - good luck!

Re: Anybody look in the mirror and not recognize yourself?

Yes. Everyone keeps telling me that I my face hasn't really changed that much. I know it's probably only slightly different but when you've looked at your face everyday for the last 26 years and suddenly it's not quite the same it because very obvious (well to me anyway!). I was messing around with ...

Re: How often do you brush/floss/rinse in a day?

a) Brush - after every meal/drink that isn't water (probably 3 times a day)
b) Floss - maybe once very other week  I do use my waterpik before I brush my teeth though
c) Rinse - no idea, most of the time all I drink is water so quite often?

Re: Pre/Post Surgery Orthodontic Logistics

Pre Surgery 1) I had the rectangular wires for about four months before the surgery on my upper arch and about 2 months before on the lower arch. They didn't feel any difference to me as they were put in once my teeth were in the correct position so was used to hold them where they are rather than c...

Re: Traveling this year with Braces?

I just didn't worry about it when I went on holiday. Went on quite a few holidays last year and didn't take a waterpik with me, I just did my best with rinsing my mouth out with water every time I ate, mouthwash & my toothbrush. I've stopped snacking since having my braces anyway and just brushe...
