Re: Bone/gum loss with braces?
Thanks! I'm not too bummed out about it other than the price! My dental insurance will only pay for half of it so I'm still on the hook for a few thousand $$!! I'm going to be putting this off for a while but I do need to get it taken care of in the next year or two or else I'm at risk for losing th...

Re: Bone/gum loss with braces?
To update, I just came back from my periodontist consultation, and I have general recession all over which is not uncommon for someone my age (34) but I have severe recession in three of my bottom front teeth, lingual side (inside) due to the braces. I need gum grafts for all of them...

Bone/gum loss with braces?
I haven't posted on here in ages! I've had my braces off since September 2012 and have been wearing retainers since then. I have my regular retainer check at my ortho's office next week, but a few weeks ago I had my cleaning at the dentist and she noticed serious gum recession and bone loss in one o...

@Jetrho, thanks!
I'm going to do it probably after my next cleaning, which is in a couple of months.

Re: Does regular health insurance pay for Oral Surgery?
My SARPE surgery was paid for by my health insurance. Dental insurance definitely will not cover it. And my orthodontist, dentist, and oral surgeon all had to team up to justify to my health insurance why it was medically necessary. It took a while but once they did, they paid for 100% of it.

Re: Embarrassed to show, or just me?
I loved showing off my braces and how my teeth, bite, and smile were improving. If people noticed them when I talked or smiled, they'd mention it and I'd discuss it. And I was also one of those annoying people who'd always show my wife every time I had an adjustment or noticed an improvement. The fu...

Re: Honestly, do you floss?
When I had braces (up until a week ago today, woohoo!) I flossed every other night with Crest Glide threader floss...I got really good at it after the first week and it made a HUGE different. That, and brushing after every meal every day (which I still do with my retainers now) made a massive differ...

Re: Whitening after braces?
This is good to read...I got my braces off 3 days ago and I've been planning on whitening them after braces for the last year.

Re: DrBlur's story
Wow, I can't believe it's been over a year since I updated. Well, to make a long story short, after 2 1/2 years of braces, a palate expander (following palate expansion surgery), and the last 6+ months with box elastics and some front-to-back elastics to align my bite and teeth, I GOT MY BRACES REMO...

Re: Braces before or after SARPE
I'm sure you could decide, but it may also depend on your orthodontist. I had my braces on for about 6 months before I had SARPE (my ortho started to straighten some teeth on my lower jaw a bit and neatened everything out up top before the surgery) but when I was having issues with my insurance comp...

Re: DrBlur's story
Update! I had my last adjustment on June 24...I got new wires on the top and bottom teeth, and my ortho kinked the wire up or down, depending on what I needed, between each tooth as he constantly put it in the brackets and took it out, in order to get the right leveling for my teeth. After putting t...

Re: Foods you try to get away with having braces...
I'm pretty bad sometimes...I eat chips, crusty bread, popcorn, nuts (sometimes)...I definitely stay away from goopy/sticky stuff, though...no gum or caramel or taffy or anything. But in general I try to keep it soft or soft enough that if I cut it into pieces, I can chew it ok... Man, I can't wait t...

Re: DrBlur's story
Expander out today! Bloody hell did that hurt, though, when they were pulling down on it to get it off of my teeth. I also have two deep red holes in the roof of my mouth where my mouth had grown around the ends of the gear pressing into it the last 7 months...quite a weird feeling! My mouth feels s...

That's great! Sounds like we're right around the same stage...I had the SARPE in Sept and am getting my expander out next week. It's a nice feeling, isn't it?

Re: How Many Pre-Surgical Consults Did You Go Through?
I had two consults, one a few months before the surgery, and one a week before. I also had a visit a week after the first consult so they could take X-rays and molds. I also had a pre-op visit (a week before surgery) with my ortho to make sure everything was ready with the braces and expander.
