Re: what are phases from numbess to regaing feeling?
Sounds very encouraging to me! I'm ~6 mo out; I still have some numb patches (tip of chin, part of lower front gums) and some patches that feel weird. It's been a slow but steady recovery...hard to describe, but I feel a bit more normal when I "check" (i.e., lightly smack myself in various...

Re: Nightmares and trouble sleeping before surgery
Do you do prayer/yoga/meditation? If so, focus on that the next couple of days. If not, or if you're still stressed after such practices, I recommend a coupla glasses of wine (I myself am partial to Pinot Grigio). ;) Seriously, though, I think it helps to pay attention to your worries but not get to...

Re: how much weight did you lose with your surgery?
I lost about 15 pounds the first two weeks. I've gained back about 8 (in--wow--over 5 months; time flies), and I've been making a conscious effort to get enough calories. Definitely agree that you shouldn't diet beforehand, but that it's a good time to change your habits. It's pretty physically trau...

Re: Last meal before surgery! (Anyone else a foodie?!)
Everything crunchy. I'm able to chew now--sorta--but I can't have fresh veggies, potato chips, pizza crust, fried anything. I kinda wish I'd eaten a whole bag of chips before surgery. Also anything you totally love, especially meats. I'm actually a vegetarian (well, mostly), but I love beef, so I ha...

Re: My Consultation with Dr. Gunson - result and thoughts
As you may know, I had a great experience with Dr. Gunson; he knows his stuff as far as movements, etc., are concerned. My upper jaw moved 4mm and my lower over 18 (!), so it may be that your upper jaw is in a fairly decent position and doesn't need too much movement. But, I don't actually know how ...

Hi mama,
I'm a little over 4 months out from double jaw with Dr. Gunson. Feel free to PM me, also.

My hospital was $78k, but insurance paid it. My double jaw was 35. Still working with the insurance on that one. PM me again if you like!

Re: October buddies
Glad to hear you're doing well, Mandy! My overanalyzing thing is a desperate fear that my chin is receeding. There's a line on the post-surgical instructions that says "the lower jaw will recede if prescribed supplements are not taken." Even though I'm taking the required supplements, I ha...

Re: Anyone here do 12 hour shifts? (? about returning to wor
Hi all, I don't work long shifts--I'm in academia, so, though I work 8-13 hours a day, I'm very flexible as to *when* I work (45-minute nap at 11 a.m.? Totally doable, unless I'm teaching before noon, which, now, quite fortunately, I'm not). I also don't have much physical labor beyond hauling books...

Re: Did you have trouble accepting your ‘new’ look?
Yeah, adjusting is...different. For the most part, I'm really happy with my new look, though I do sometimes feel like Frankenstein's monster when I look in the mirror and forget to smile. :/ My ears feel plugged up about 50% of the time; the surgeon says this is normal. When they're plugged I can't ...

Re: October buddies
Bump, again!
How is everyone? I'm doing well, although the screw in my top jaw is driving me nuts...I actually dreamed last night that I got a Phillips head sd out of the drawer and removed it myself. Alas, it's still there. Other than that, though, things are good.
Updates, please.

Re: Recovery time for Upper & Lower Jaw Surgery
Yeah, 4 weeks should be enough. You'll still probably tire easily, and you won't be able to eat normally, but you should be able to function at something like 70% of normal capacity.
