My First Day in Braces

experiences of ArchWired readers

Rebecca from Oregon

Here I am, a 36 year old woman, with 4 growing children and I decide to get braces put on. What was I thinking!!!

When my only daughter went in over a year ago to have braces put on her teeth for her cleft palate anomaly, I reluctantly agreed that I would have braces put on my teeth too, in the near future. Boy, does time fly.

So, today I got my uppers on. It wasn't so bad. I sat in the chair expecting the worst. I had imagined all of the horror stories that my daughter told me- the stretching, the pulling, the rubber band spacer things, the smell of the "glue"....

The dentists assistant reassured me that everything would be fine and that I should just relax. So, I put on the tinted glasses, took out my hair clip, held on to it really tightly and closed my eyes. Within an hour I was out of there. Except for the stretching of the mouth (which is very uncomfortable, by the way), things went well.

Eating later on... Not too bad, had some mashed potatoes and gravy and a milky way bar (mini, of course). Everything went well and I feel fine. I'll let you know how the bottoms go, but for now... I will just enjoy looking like a teenager (hopefully not acting like one) and within a couple of years will enjoy having a brighter and straighter smile.
